I also didn't get round to seeing this till last week. Before seeing it I really wasn't sure if it was my kind of film or not... and to be honest, I'm still not sure...
For the first third of the film I didn't really find any redeeming features. The events unfolded, but I didn't find myself caring enough for either of the main characters to really be interested in what they were doing or the consequences of it all. But it did get better as it went on, and the ending was actually very touching. Sadly though, I don't think it recovered quite enough to be anything more than "fairly good" overall.
I think the film's main redeeming features were Michelle Williams and her two daughters, who played their parts well throughout and acted as a good "homely" contrast to the cowboys' wild lives on the mountain. The eldest daughter especially, showing Heath Ledger the best parts of his "other life" and providing him with a real internal struggle.
Overall, I don't think it's a film I'll watch again, and I certainly don't think it was worthy of the awards it won, but it was alright.
P.S. - I'll apologise now for not being a girl...
