Passing familiarity with the genre.

I've seen Ghost in the Shell. I thought perhaps a complex background got in the way of an interesting central concept. Still, pretty good.

Other than that, the main anime I'm familiar with is Neon Genesis: Evangelion, and I didn't get to the end of that series.

I really like the series 3x3 eyes and I liked the music from The Legend of the Four Kings. Legend of the Overfiend was great, if a little twisted and there are always good films to watch late night on sci-fi on saturday. I know alot of people who really liked Ninja Scroll too, but I didn't think too much of it myself, and I think Akira is overated too! (I think)

I like the Anime of Battle Angel Alita, but it isn't a patch on the Manga.

The Guyver or Cyber City are the best imo and Akira tottally rocks and as mentioned Ghost in the Shell is rad to.

I keep meaning to watch Ghost in the Shell.

And I saw Gogol 13 (?) and thought it sucked big time.

let me see.... Akira, Ghost In The Shell, Ninja Scrolls, Patlabor, Fist of the North Star, the few bits of Guyver I saw I liked (not the live action film though, as that sucked more than a Dyson).

There was another one I saw with was good, but a bit strange.. Urotsukidoji - From Wired.com - "A half-hour of Urotsukidoji would have Freud on the carpet, gibbering like an electroshocked baboon."

As has been said, Akira & Ghost In The Shell are both great & I would reccommend either as excellent introductions to anime. Ninja Scroll on the other hand I found a little dull & gave up about half an hour in (possibly more to do with the temptation of SSX).

Inc - its Golgo 13, and I get what you mean. What struck me about it was the way it had a plot & tone that would have been more at home in Jean Reno film - it had a lot in common with both Leon & Ronin, and I don't think the way it translated to anime was that great.

Friends of mine at uni keep telling me I must watch "Blood: The First Vampire"... anyone got any opinions on that?

And how can we have an anime thread without mentioning Sailor Moon? Or, on a less frivolous note, Perfect Blue... that film remains the only ever to genuinley disturb me. Anyone else seen & been disturbed by it?

Yeah, I picked it up a few months ago, it takes a a little while to get up to speed (which is a pain when the film is only 42 minutes long anyway), but once it does get going it's pretty fantastic

If that's "Blood: The First Vampire" then I thought it was fantastic. I want to say I'm digusted by all of you, ESPECIALLY DEMONA! Ya heard me! Not one of you, not one, has mentioned the two most fantastic anime series.

1) The Legend of Crystania... not only original, amazing and funny, but it also rose from the Record of Lodoss, a very crappy anime series

2) easily the greatest: El-Hazard... a must see, no matter who you are. Funny, clever, EXTREMELY original and absolutly fabulous

Two thumbs, way, way up!

You know, I saw it, and liked it, but maybe the Matrix spoiled it for me, but it felt an act too short.

Dont want to spoil the plot for anyone, but as i recall theres a big fight, think the heroes a gonner, but in fact the hero comes back, allbeit changed... move law now dictates hero goes back and wipes floor with bad guys dangly bits... (cables in this case). But nope, it just ends.... gahh

I'm not sure if that isn't something that can be found in several Anime films though. Or if it's part of the Japanese film making style? Interestingly Shirow's own Appleseed Anime suffers from this seemingly shortened ending too, whereas the Manga seem to be resolved satisfactorily.

Maybe they just like to chop up the master's work

Urotsukidoji (roughly!) translated is 'the Legend of the Overfiend' the manga film I was referring to earlier. I'm glad you liked it because it makes me feel alot better about the fact that I did too!

got to say Akira is prob my fave ,venus wars is good, so it Luputa:the flying island. series wise macross or the guyver were both great
