But however if I did go the the piccys , then no in answer to your first question the film reviews wouldn't stop me from going to see a film that I had already decided I wanted to see.

And if I could only go and see one film this summer , and I had to pick from those two I would say Spidey purely because I intend to buy SW to go with the set

Personally I liked Episode 1

I have an unlimited card for my local UGC cinema's, so that is some encouragement to go and see anything that looks interesting... and even if something looks bad but i fancy checking it out anyway, i haven't paid out for it specially. Last week i filled a spare evening watching Waking Life and then The Count of Monte Cristo, which made for a bizarre double bill

I tend to miss things due to time, which is where reviews come in as i prioritise things. I never bothered getting round to seeing Phantom Menace at the cinema because i heard bad things, and actually haven't seen it yet. I'll get round to it eventually.

And if i could only see one of the two, i think i'm more interested in seeing how Spidey turns out.

What would it take to stop you going to see Episode 2 at the cinema (assuming you were already)?

Is the Star Wars brand still strong enough to convince you to pay money over regardless of the critics, word of mouth, boring 'love story' oriented trailers etc etc?

For example ... if every newspaper review in this country said it was terrible ... would you still go?

And then ... if you could only go and see one movie this summer ... Spidey or Star Wars?

I have so little respect for the vast majority of the newspapers and their film critics that their opinion counts for little more than zero. I thought the trailers were fantastic, I'm a sucker for a love story and especially one involving Natalie Portman. The visuals are set to be the best ever in a Star Wars movie which pretty much means the best ever full stop. And what the tickets were £5 or so when we bought them, about the price of a Big Mac and Fries! The story/plot at this point seems merely secondary

Besides all that... it's STAR WARS

The Spiderman trailers looked good, used the theme music from The Matrix, and seemed to cover the basic aspects of the original Spidey story. I'll catch it when I get round to it, but after the X-Men movie I think I can take or leave superhero flicks. I hope I'll be wrong and Spidey will live up to my dreams of how it should be. If anything this movie has more to live up to as it has 40 years of history to deal with not just the dissapointment that it's predecessor brought.

The impression you give from your post is that you've decided it is bad, based on your pre-conceptions and your opinion of Episode 1. Okay thye original question first. I am 200% certain that I am going to the cinema to see Attack of The Clones. if the film doesn't live up to my expectations ala The Phantom Menace well thats just too bad.

Newspaper/Magazine reviews of films do not conivince me to watch them. There was a lot of hype about Moulin Rouge but I won't watch that film unless forced to as part of some ingenious torture.

One movie this year Spidey or Star Wars...have to be Star Wars. Don't get me wrong I like Spiderman and think the movie will be brilliant from what I've seen/heard but Star Wars is a part of modern culture and I want to see exactly what George has done to expand on it.

For the first part of a new trilogy I think it was a good film. Okay whoever came up with the idea for Jar Jar's annoying voice needs shot(unless it was George Lucas himself in which case he needs a rap across the knuckles with small flimsy ruler ) but apart from that i thought the story was okay. The battle scene between Qui Gon, Obi Wan and Darth Maul at the end was great and most of the rest of the film was enjoyable.

If you're looking for *bad* Star Wars movies Inc why not try Star Wars: Caravan Of Courage or Battle For Endor...both spin-offs of the Star Wars story and both not the most productive uses of celluloid.

In my opinion I think Episode 2 could turn out to be the best Star Wars film out of the 5 released...although it'll be tough to beat Empire

Episode 1 wasn't as bad as many folks make it out to be. It wasn't particularly good and wasn't a patch on the first 2 films ( Ithink it was a patch on Jedi, but only a patch). Yes there were gaping holes in the plot. Yes there were back-continuity errors and so on.and yes ok at a push it was a pile of substandard dross. But I can't honestly label it "the worst pile of substandard dross".

Well I didn't see the X-Men movie at the cinema because of the huge differences between the comic and the trailers/screenshots. X-Men had so many differences from the comic it was incredible. Worst of all the comics changed to bring them in line with the money making movie I'll see Spiderman when I get around to it, but I probably won't be excited till I get in the queue. I've been excited about the new Star Wars film for weeks now.

Well, nothing really. I'm not all that bothered about 'Spiderman' myself, and I think going to see it just because it's Spiderman is just as silly as going to see 'Attack of the Clones' just because it's Star Wars. However Sam Raimi has directed good films in the past, and it seems likely that he will again.

There is, on the other hand, good reason to doubt the quality of AotC because George Lucas hasn't made a decent film in 20 years..

I still maintain that Qui Gon should have been the younger of the two Jedi, so that Obi Wan's apprentice was the one that died. It would have given a darker twist to the story more in line with what's to come and also cleared the continuity error where Kenobi wasn't Yoda's apprentice as was stated in 'Empire.

Difficult to see, always in motion is the future. I'm just hoping the Arena Battle at the end isn't too Pantomime But some of Amidala's costumes might well make up for that

No need to read between the lines. It was right there.

After Episode 1, Tomb Raider, The Mummy Returns, Jurassic Park 3 and a couple of other big budget Hollywood blockbuster event movies, I made a promise to myself to stop believing the hype. I also specifically decided with regard to Lucas (who himself thinks his films are rubbish) not to pay any more money to see a Star Wars film until it was demonstrated that he had made a good one.

With Ep 2 ... if every reviewer said it was great, if all the word of mouth was good and if I knew enough people who loved it then I might go and see it. I just think the Star Wars brand is a) overrated anyway, and b) totally devalued by Ep 1 (Milky admits to being disappointed by Ep 1 but still builds up his hopes for Ep 2 ... the triumph of hope over experience).

I guess what I am getting at is not many people thought the last film was particularly good, and yet they still get excited about a sequel in the desperate hope it will live up to the memories of their youth.

Re: Spider-man ... Sam Raimi as director inspires far more hope in me than Lucas (similarly Peter Jackson versus Chris Columbus...) and the vast majority of word of mouth and critical commentary in America has been positive (if it hadn't I would be far less certain to go and see it). There is no precedent working against it, and if it is bad, I will do what I am doing with SW Ep 2 (and Harry Potter) and avoid the inevitable sequel.

Id go whether every review said it was rubbish or not as I like to make my on decisions. Ive read a lot of reviews for films and half of them I dont even think they have seen the film or just pick on one point.

Ill go and see both Spidey and Star Wars

im prob goin to both, as far as i know the only qualm at the mo with spidey is that his 'web slingin' is part of his mutatio rather than the constructs in the comics

prob go c AOTC first cos star wars is great, hope they bring out Mace's lightsabre on toy i'll have to get one!! me a child still..never!!

Different people get different things out of all things creative, film, music, art etc. I don't think its fair to label something just because one can't think of anything positive about it. Sonebody somewhere obviously did!

As for chosing spiderman/star wars - I'd have to go for starwars. The lead in spidey looks too much like an old flame for me to possibly enjoy it!

Have to agree with you there sis , my kids thought that it was far better than the originals, and I would say yes due to the special effects, more realistic creatures (in their eyes) . They watch the others and enjoy them , but if given a choice will watch EP1 anyday

I wouldn't say that I'm hopeful of a good film in Episode 2. I would say that I'm not going to judge Episode 2 on the merits(or lack) of Episode 1. If I was to use the rational 'the first film was rubbish so i'm not watching the sequel' then I would never have watched Hellraiser 2, Star Trek 2:The Wrath Of Khan. I feel a film should be judged on it's own merits. I have a vague idea of what the story will be, I've seen some visuals and all-in-all I've been impressed. It's not hope that makes me think Ep 2 will be good but a gut feeling after seeing what I've seen.

It's not a youthful thing either. I saw Star Wars countless times as a kid but never really got into it as much as I got into anything else ala Transformers, He-Man etc. However about 7 years ago I saw all the films again and was blown away. When you think that these films are more than 20 years old the techniques used are just amazing. The story throught the original trilogy while a bit weird at times (incest in a U film ) is good and really brings the audience into it(Darth revealing he is Luke's father..how far can your jaw drop moment).

So all i can say Inc is take a day off as resident film critic/cynic, buy a ticket and enjoy Episode 2 for what it is...A story set A Long Time Ago, In A Galaxy Far Far Away

Because of course only a cynic would dislike Star Wars.

I guess eventually I'll get my head around the idea that switching your brain off before entering a cinema is a good thing and maybe get rid of that annoying habit of disagreeing with people.

I think keeping your brain switched on, your mind open and your preconceptions at home is the best way to go to the movies.

I know that certain directors' work suffers as they go through the sequels. James Cameron's "Terminator" was a suberb piece of cyberpunk cinema, the sequel "Terminator 2 - Judgement Day" I think is best described as

I'm still looking forward to Episode II and getting really quite excited about it now. I'll admit I could probably have written/scripted/directed/choreographed better than the team that put it together like I could with Episode I, but hey they're not perfect
