I was given to believe that it was always intended to be a trilogy...

The Matrix - Reloaded/Revolutions
OK quick question. Even though there are now sequels to "The Matrix" in various stages of post production/shooting/whatever, my question is should there be? Or should it have been a case of "There is no sequel".
I personally think that it should have been left alone at the end of the first film. I think the ending was sufficient and that all the loose ends had been sufficiently tied up especially given Neo's closing statement "I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end, I came here to tell you how it's going to begin"
By presenting the sequels I think that it IS telling how it's going to end and that's not something for artisitc reasons that I think should have happened. I understand Hollywood wants to milk a successful franchise, but I fear that like "Bladerunner" that "The Matrix" is one of those films where the character's story has been told and it should be left where it is.
Having said that you can bet your bottom dollar I'll be going to see the new films.

Quite possibly, but given the way in which the first film ended (imho) so perfectly, should they maybe have reconsidered?

And was it intended to be a trilogy becasue the writers had more to say with the characters, or simply to try to rake in the cash?

Yep. The first is about 'birth' the seond about 'life' the third about 'death'. They also recast Aliaya, but I can't remember the actress' name

i can't wait to see the next movies...if they spoil the first however, i'm likely just to pretend that there were no sequels

I don't think the Matrix is based on any specific book, but it does borrow a lot from a lot of other Sci-Fi film's, books etc.
The actress replacing Aaliyah is Nona Gaye (if i remember right).
As far as i can tell the Wachowski brothers intended the movie to be a trilogy. As for the first film standing on it's own. I guess it could ,but there is so much still left to be told. We did'nt get to see Zion or how the machines took over. There is still plenty to tell in the sequels if you ask me.

More story to tell maybe...but I think the Matrix is WAY overhyped! Its not a deep film, its a blockbuster entertainer which doesnt require much thinking. Dont get me wrong - I don't mind that, it just bugs me how much its held in reverence around the world.
Maybe im just jealous, cos I started writing a book once with a similar plot to the Matrix. Admittedly, 'my book' never got past the first chapter so I cant complain.
My story was about a guy who finds himself back in the ruined, real world, after escaping..'The Matrix' (ok so it wasnt called that when I wrote it). The story was meant to be about how he slowly comes to terms with his new surroundings, finds out what the hell happened to the real world, and starts to try and convince people back in the dreamworld what is really happening. Meanwhile, the creators, aware of his escape, and wanting to keep the status quo, and their interests intact, are on his case to stop him. That's as far as I got with a storyline.
