*Thinks* ... Arrrrgh! My head hurts!

Yeah, I always had problems with someone who was portrayed as being Mr BigandEvil's right hand man being sent under like that.. I mean, how long was he expected to be undercover like that? It looked like it was just chance that he went to Recall and everything came out, unless something else would have kicked in to ensure that he went anyway... Iunno.. *rubs head*

OK, when I first saw Total Recall I went for the mainstream view that it was left deliberately open ended - 'What Really Happaned?' And kinda liked it but wasn't blown away.

But this left with me with some problems. Being released into a vacuum, having skin pulled in several directions only to revert to normal in the nick of time when the oxygen was released. And the over the top panned shot for the ending. And a few other small details that just seemed more than a little silly.

Then I had what alcoholics commonly refer to as a 'moment of clarity'. I was thinking about the casting as I was watching the film, some years later, for the second time. Armold Schwatzeneger as a construction worker. Seems a bit OTT, doesn't it? But Arnold Schwatzeneger as the self-fantasy of a construction worker? Sharon Stone as your wife? That makes sense. Once you start watching the film with the assumption that it is all fantasy, it makes a lot more sense. You don't need to resort to arguements like, 'it's just a film, they haven't thought about it that deeply'. It works seemlessly.

I've not read the original Philip K Dick novel either, though I have read quite a few. He's good on research, and he does think about the implications of the ideas and settings involved. He's not a pulp writer. I've also read a few interviews with the director, and he seems pretty clued up.

I can't prove that this was always the intention, but it makes the most sense to me.

Yeah I never wever managed to figure out exactly what happened...I hated the ending but I did think it was a cool film...fave scene has to be when he's trying to sneak through customs in the guise of a woman and the head thing goes faulty...class

we used to have a person (editted original description due to possible offence and they might actually come to this site being a buffy author and fan) anyway s/he used to come into Fp a lot and found out that they nicknamed them "two weeks" coz they look like the disguise AS uses to get through custums, evil i know but i laughed so hard.
