I'm stunned by this....if it is a joke it aint very funny. The petition has been suspended by PetitionOnline.com and after reading some of the signatories 99% of them are attacks on the author of the petition and the website...whoever started this stuff is an absolute idiot in my opinion.
The Two Towers protest site - Views?
This is very weird indeed. http://www.twotowersprotest.org is purportedly run by a group of people who feel the film title The Two Towers is insensitive in light of the destruction of the WTC. Having read through it, I can't believe anyone could possibly be serious about this (ie the FAQ accuses Peter Jackson of hate speech and deliberately exploiting the events of September 11) and yet, if it is a spoof, it's totally deadpan - there is not the slightest hint of it being a joke.
The comments I've seen about the site and associated online petition all seem to take it seriously but, as I said, I can't believe it's anything other than a joke. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Dear oh dear oh dear. As you say, it's hard to believe that they're serious, but it sure does seem that way. I could just about buy it if the FAQ didn't contain:
I'd suggest that they also try lobbying the Tolkien estate to get the name of the book changed as well, but then, they probably already are...
And it has nothing to do with the fact that that's what the book it's based on is called, obviously..
The movie is intentionally being named The Two Towers in order to capitalize on the tragedy of September 11. Clearly, you cannot deny the fact that this falls under hate speech.

This I read about quiet a few months back that site has been there for ages now
I think judging by the responses from most people it was never taken very seriously

Yeah I read about this a while ago too.
I'm pretty sure someone *did* try lobbying to get the actual book name changed.
Idiots.

Oh dear...Some people Obviously Tolkien looked into the future and deliberatly chose the title to offend people, its the only explaination!!
This is just rediculas (like my spelling) how can they hold a petition against a book written almost 50 years a go and has nothing in any way or form related to the horrible incident and be called a hate speech??? these people bewilder me I've signed against it being changed. not that it matters now its being released soon whoo-hoo
I did also wonder if a bunch of militant Elvis fans will get upset when Return of the King comes out?

All i can say is 'Stoopid Americans' I heard about this a few weeks ago. Its not even worthy of laughing at as its so ridiculous it goes out on the other side of comedy.
Hmm... looks like I'm in good company. Did he say anything about Wagner fans having a case over Fellowship of the Ring?

Wouldn't it be interesting if he was a type of prophet in his own right? You could imagine people taking this seriously and looking into hidden meanings for all the characters, locations and actions.

Poor Tolkien must be spinning in his grave - especially as he went to such lengths in the Prologue to The Fellowship of the Ring to stress that Lord of the Rings wasn't even an allegory of something as obvious as the war that was being fought while he wrote it.
What about The Return of the King though? Maybe the Americans will think it's the product of a secret group who want to restore British rule???
I'm sure I've heard that one used to try to argue that Tolkein was a Nazi before...a bit like the arguments in the 'Tolkein is racist' thread here I guess.

Wagner. The Ring cycle. Fellowship of the Ring. Er... that's it.
