Thought I'd read somewhere that Ian McKellen was going to play Prof. Dumbledore? And insiders were dismissing fears that people would be confused by him playing appearing in both LOTR and Harry Potter.

The other option LOTR producers were thinking of doing was to superimpose Harris' head onto his body double's head but they didn't have enough unused shots to carry that off.

Or was this just another tabloid rumour?

It was rumoured to be Ian McKellan as I heard it too along with the possibility of Christopher Lee which totally freaked me out he would soooooo not work as Dumbly-dore (sorry reading goblet of fire) he's ALWAYS always portrayed the bad guy it just wouldn't be right.

the link i got the info from was from those annoying MSN pop-ups that appear just as you signed in msn messenger so just gonna sort that out now. me ditz.

I really would have prefered seeing Ian McKellen take over - although maybe he just feels very current right now playing Gandalf.

At the moment it seems to be all rumours, mostly completely unsubstantiated and half of them probably started by someone on a movie news website wanting to fill a few column inches (column bytes?) as much as anything else.

Christopher Lee was the first man touted for the part, but quickly came out and said he wouldn't even have discussed it so soon after Harris' death. McKellan's website denied that he had accepted the part, despite reports that he had.

It's a trend in media news, that in order to fill the ever-growing number of media magazines, webzines and news services, more and more of the content becomes speculation and non-news; like a story in Dreamwatch several months ago, which explained in some detail that Eliza Dushku might be appearing in Buffy Season 7 and Angel Season 4...or she might not. So far, most of the rumours regarding Dumbledore seem to have been on a par with that, as far as journalistic rigour is concerned.

That would be the perfect option as no matter who gets cast he is always going to be compared. Richard had signed on for all the movies as he loved the character, and as far as most people see it he was the perfect image from what was conjured up from the pages.

But would the technology be great enough to do it for an entire movie? That is how they completed The Crow after Brandon's death, but that was only a few scenes.

I think so, ok hes not the main character in the film, I dunno how often he'll be in the 3rd one as I've not read the books and don't like the films, but in the crow could you actually tell it wasn't Brandon Lee. Ok they put him in shadows and stuff quite a bit but it worked very well I thoguht and that was a fare few years back now so technology is better now and i'd say that they could pass it off.

Did they not put do a lot of Oliver Reed's scenes in Gladiator using computer animation after he died??

From what I've heard the body double will do the movie and they'll use CGI to make it look like him. Not sure how they go about the sound though *shrug*
