i really liked Ring/2/0 (despite the huge hype i was given by people who had seen it it wasnt as pee-ya-pants scary as they all kept claiming) even though sometimes the subtitles were obscured from view when the picture was dark/black lol.
i havent seen the american version yet though all that have seen it and seen the original say it was pants and felt it was ruined while all those that have seen the remake but not the original have said the remake was fab!

I hate watching dubbed films, if there's a subbed version I'll watch that instead.
That way you're watching/listening to the original performance, even though you might not understand what they are saying, the emotion comes across better

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon just seemed that bit more cohesive in the original Mandarin, than the (still very good) dub.

I also prefer watching subbed anime to dubbed

I prefer my films dubbed.
I like to have the option to turn away for whatever reason but still be able to follow the story.

I recently watched 'Brotherhood of the Wolf' & the same actors did the track in both French & English, so it didn't seem quite so disquieting.
I thought that was quite a good idea.

Argh! I hate dubbed films! They're usually ridiculous and badly done and it drives me crazy. So subtitiles for me, plus there's always the hope that if you watch enough subtitled films, you might pick up some of the language. Mallrats dubbed in german is damn funny though
Remakes can be ok if they're done well, but I don't really see the point. I got quite angry when they made The Ring - it just seemed wrong somehow.

I watch a fair amount of anime, both subbed and dubbed.

Generally subbed is better - usally because the Japanese actors are better than those they get to do dubbing, and if the translation is of low quality (not uncommon when you're downloading things off the internet) then it's less jarring to read than to have to hear.

Poorly synched dubbing is less of a problem with cartoons than live action, but it still occurs.

However, there are exceptions. It depends upon the quality of the translation and the voice-actors in the adopted language - and if they are of a piece with the original then it is somewhat less effort to follow dubbed. I have come across one piece of anime which was set in England and in that case being able to hear english accents probably added something in tone which the original did not have.

In general, I really hate dubbed movies, even if I don't speak the original language.

That one was dubbed by Disney for the cinema release, and done very well too. It's one of the few dubbed titles I have .

Hellsing comes to mind. Also Noir was very weird with all those french talking japanese... But still better then having a dubbed version where all the french speak english
I allways prefer the people on the screen to speak their own language. In world war 2 movies those german should speak german, that fits 'em a lot better

I take it you mean the one entirely in Latin and Aramaic? That sounds... well... interesting, although one rumour (rather daftly) suggesting there would be no subs whatsoever!

EDIT: Oops, forgot to put this into the original post: I quite like subbed movies, sometimes I don't even realise the subs are even there... *shrug*

I prefer subtitled over dubbed film (unless it's a cartoon). Only problem with subbed is that I find it a little difficult to keep up with reading the text and drinking in the scene the film is showing me.

I liked 'Clubbed to Death', named after Rob D's classic track, on first viewing, but later discovered I wasn't so keen. It was only the great music in the film (and a gorgeous girl in a skimpy dress) that drew me in.

There was another french film I watched that I do not remember the name of and it drives me crazy, because it was fantastic. It basically has one of those crazy plots like Lock Stock / Snatch, only much better. It was about a bunch of so called unrelated people and showed the huge effects they have on each others lives (most without realising it).

If anyone has the slightest clue what it is, i'd love to know.

Also, does anyone know whether the French version of Mysterious Cities of Gold (Les Mysteriéuses Cités D'or) on DVD has English subtitles? I know that it doesn't have english audio (crazily).

Generally I'm all for subs. If you loose the actors' original words and intonation, you've lost a good chunk of the performance. That, and dubbing, with a few honourable exceptions, is an artform of the grotesque. The Japanese dub of Monty Python's Holy Grail is the pinacle of this dark practise.

Good subs keep the original meaning of the dialogue without adhering to the exact words: lots of people complained that La Haine's adoption of American street slang in the incongruous setting of Paris was completely innapropriate, but given the film's characters, it's hard to think what could be more suitable.
