Blade 2
I loved the 1st film, but there was just 'something' that made it stand out over the original.
Discovering that whichever Goss it was who was in the film could actually act, was rather surprising, & not in a bad way.

Empire Strikes Back

Some people would disagree with this, and maybe on a filmic technique it's not as good, but i find ESB to be a much more satisfying filmic experience than A New Hope.

I was going to say that as well, also Star Trek 2, Indiana Jones & The Temple Of Doom, Lethal Weapon 2.

Theres probably some more but I can't think of any off the top of my head.

Aliens

Some might argue that it's a men-on-a-mission/war movie rather than a monster/horror movie like the original, but while it may not scare the socks of you like the original, it is far superior in almost every other aspect.

Now if only they'd use the Dark Horse series for the next movies, and pretend Alien 3 & resurrection were just bad dreams......

As with any other film, A New Hope wouldn't have gotten a sequel if it hadn't of made money, and if ESB had bombed, there probably wouldn't have been a Return of the Jedi, so i think i can include it

then what about the godfather 2 no ones pointed out that that was part of a trilogy.

Not a planned Trilogy. Just 3 connected films therefore sequels.

i wouldve thought the star wars films were just "three connected films" whereas the godfather trilogy was all from one book one complete running story (and an awesome book at that only read it this year) still confused.

You could view it as being in the second (chronologically) set of films and thus a sequel

X-Men I think was an indicator of things to come;
The first one wasn't really a standalone movie, it was a pilot movie.
The same can be said of most other comic book adaptations of late.
The one exception being Spider Man...
