To be honest, i was a bit peeved Cold Mountain didn't get more awards. Not that i didn't like The Lord of the Rings, i did very much so, but i just thought Cold Mountain deserved more recognition.
BAFTA Results
Hey folks, the BAFTAs were on last night, so here are the results. I forgot who won a lot of the smaller awards, but here are all the main ones:
Best film: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Orange Film of the Year: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
David Lean award for achievement in direction: Peter Weir (Master and Commander: the Far Side of the World)
Leading actor: Bill Murray (Lost in Translation)
Leading actress: Scarlett Johansson (Lost in Translation)
Supporting actor: Bill Nighy (Love Actually)
Supporting actress: Renee Zellweger (Cold Mountain)
Alexander Korda award for outstanding British film: Touching the Void
Carl Foreman award for best British debut: Emily Young (Kiss of Life)
Non English-language film: In This World
Best soundtrack: Cold Mountain
Best special effects: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Best hair & makeup: Pirates of the Carribean
Editing: Lost In Translation
So, that's it. Overall, there aren't any big surprises in that list. The Lord of the Rings got the results it was inevitably going to get, winning several awrds including the big. I don't think it deserved awards like best film, as Cold Mountain and Lost in Translation were definitely better films overall. Still, the big film gets the big awards, that's how awards shows work.
Scarlett Johanssen and Bill Murray getting best actor and actress is fantastic, their performances in Lost in Translation were simply superb. Don't think Bill Nighy should have got best supporting actor in any alternate world, Tim Robbins was fantastic in Mystic River and he would have been a much better choice.

All I can say is that anything which gets Scarlett Johansson's photo plastered over the front page of virtually every daily newspaper can't be a bad thing
It's a crying shame the meandering Return of the King won best film, but that, Mr Anderson, had the air of in-evit-ability. But it's a very pleasent surprise to see the likes of Cold Mountain and Master and Commander picked up some major awards.
Here's hoping that little bash Stateside takes note of our good example.
