Along Came Polly
Writer: John Hamburg
Director: John Hamburg
Starring: Ben Stiller, Jennifer Aniston
Rated: 12a
Running Time: 90 mins
Trailer: Quicktime, Various Sizes
Tagline: For the most cautious man on Earth, life is about to get interesting.
Along Came Polly is a very amusing comedy that while not being subtle at all, isnÂ’t as obnoxious and base as some recent comedies have been.
The film centres on Reuban Feffer (Ben Stiller), a risk assessment analyst for a big insurance company. HeÂ’s the best there is at his job, because he lives his life by worrying about everything and never taking risks. Until on the first day of his honeymoon, he catches his wife banging a scuba-diver instructor named Claude.
Understandably, this turns ReubanÂ’s life upside down. He soon meets Polly Prince (Jennifer Aniston), who he went to middle school with. The film then is the story of how Reuban overcomes his self and his idiosyncrasies in order to secure the woman he has fallen in love with.
IÂ’m not a fan of Ben Stiller. I canÂ’t stand him. The trailer for this film looked pretty good though, so I took a chance. And I could live with him in this film. I still donÂ’t like him much, but because the film was funny, without sinking to levels the devil wouldnÂ’t dare touch, and Stiller didnÂ’t ham it up much, it was funny and enjoyable. Aniston was wonderful as always. A magazine recently called her the most famous and recognisable woman in Hollywood, and said that after Friends, sheÂ’ll be one of the top leading ladies in five years. I can believe that. During the filming period for this film, she was also filming Friends and Bruce Almighty, but she never strays into either of those characters. SheÂ’s hot too, which helps.
The rest of the cast are very well placed. You have Phillip Seymour Hoffman (Red Dragon) as Sandy Lyle, Debra Messing (Will & Grace) as ReubanÂ’s Wife and Alec Baldwin (Pearl Harbour) as his butt-slapping boss. They all do their jobs very well, delivering well timed, funny performances.
Overall, itÂ’s a very funny film. Go see it.
