Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (spoiler reviews)
Great stuff, really great stuff.
This episode was much, much better than Episodes I and II, and in my opinion, better than Episode VI too.
The first section of the film, from the beginning leading up to when Chancellor Palpatine was rescued was surprisingly light in tone, retaining the cavalier, light hearted tone of the previous prequels. This was reflected not only in R2D2's oddball activities, but in the dialogue between Obi-Wan and Anakin. Lots of banter.
I loved the opening scene, which was one long, long shot. Not a new idea, but it's one that works. Speaking of the opening... now *that's* great CGI. The Battle of Coruscant was great, brilliant bit of work there.
The visual style of the film generally was very good. My only problem with the way it was filmed was during the Duel. Many of the shots were two close to the characters, making it harder to follow their actions than it needed to be. It still worked, but i would have liked longer shots.
The dialogue was better this time. Moments of naffness certainly (mostly between Padme and Anakin), but it was no worse than the original trilogy dialogue, which people tend to forget is shite 9 times out of 10.
Some scenes really approached the best quality the series has ever attained. The bit with Anakin and Padme on the balconies really struck a chord, it was great. The Order 66 montage was excellent too, and any scene starring Yoda pretty much rocked. Best CG character rendition since (and including) Gollum as far as i'm concerned.
But then, at the end, Lucas went a bit OTT. I know he loves old monster films and saturday matinees, but Vader's 'NOOOOOOOOOOOO' and frankenstein style rebirth didn't really fit. The room being destroyed in total silence would have been so much classier.
All taken into account though, I still rank it as my 3rd favourite SW film at the moment, which makes my ranking:
1. Empire Strikes Back
2. A New Hope
3. Revenge of the Sith
4. Return of the Jedi
5. Attack of the Clones
6. The Phantom Menace
That may change with time, but only time will tell that.
