In the not too distant future there is an elite team of three pilots working for the US Naval Airforce in a special program. A team consisting of the best of the best dominating the sky armed with the most advanced and experimental technology the US government has to offer. Their mission is to fight “terrorists” wherever they may operate on this earth. After what has obviously been some pretty rigorous training they are finally assigned a “boat”. However just after they arrive at the carrier they are joined, to their great disappointment, by their fourth wingman EDI (Extreme Deep Invader) aka tin man. And instead of doing their thing they now have to train and “babysit” a piece of technology as EDI still has to “learn”.
EDI is a smart UCAV (unmanned combat aireal vehicle) with a quantum computer for a brain. Strangely enough according to the tech guys on the carrier it is the first tested application of quantum computing. It could be me but having a (extremely cool looking) jet fighter as your first tested application seems a bit “stupid”. If you want to test something like that take a tank. You get more space and driving around is a hell of a lot less complex than flying. Although admittedly it wouldn't have looked half as cool as some of the maneuvers EDI makes throughout the movie. However this is not the first or the last time in this movies that the tech heads under us would raise an eyebrow.
In the middle of the training mission the team is reassigned to go after a group of terrorist leaders and from that point onwards everything goes seriously wrong. And when lighting strikes EDI does what every untested piece of technology with the capability to learn, evolve and blow up a small country does..... he goes rogue. And you guessed it our team of kickass pilots have to bring him back. Which of course is easier said than done.
Although in many points scientifically completely inaccurate and in places just “stupid”, fight terrorists with planes?!?, it certainly is a very entertaining movie. A nice “no brainer” movie which you just let role over you and enjoy. It has just enough conspiracy, action, romance and plot twists (although be it somewhat predictable in places) to keep everyone happy.
Overall not a bad movie, certainly not as bad as the 4.5 imdb rated it, but certainly not great either. It won't be up there in the lists next to the Godfather trilogy but it is certainly worth watching. Btw you should definitely keep watching till after the credits for a good old “terminator” moment
