Mission: Impossible 3
Mission: Impossible 3 is the latest installment in this 'classic' franchise. The last film wasn't received well at all. I've not seen it, but everybody knows that much.
Well, i'm betting this one will be much better received.
When the film opens, our hero, Ethan Hunt (played once again by Tom Cruise) is settling down and preparing to get married. He's now a teacher, training next-generation spies, but he's happy in his non-spy life. Blink and he's dragged into the field again and he has a nemesis by the name of Davian, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Hoffman and Cruise are the two single best things about the film. Hoffman plays the villain in an understated, utterly cruel way and permeates the entire film. Very convincing. Cruise on the other hand does well in the action and drama scenes alike. Abrams and the writers have also put in enough of the homey stuff with his wife that Cruise gets to do his charming, Jerry Maguire thing. It works great.
The team is rounded out by Ving Rhames, Maggie Q and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. They all have some good riffs going with each other, the dialogue is snappy. Rhames and Cruise's characters especially have some really good lines.
The action scenes are great, fast, frenetic and full of danger. My only niggle was it was extremely loud. Too loud, but it might have been the cinema's fault, not the film.
J.J. Abrams' direction is well executed, but not as distinctive as i'd have expected. Having said that, the film worked out great, and he could very well become a huge hollywood director if he picks the right projects.

This movie seems to be doing very badly in the box office money wise that is. Although it's topping the charts at the mo I don't see that happening with so many "really good" movies being released in May.
Could it have anything to do with the Cruise fatigue? With his bad press by far outweighed his good coverage I can't see this doing much good for his ratings especially considering how good MI2 was.

Apparently its only in the US where its not doing so great. Overseas its taking a fair pile, so I think American perception of Cruise is the likely reason.

I've heard stories that it was Cruise's constant gushing about Katie Holmes that may have done him in.

I was watching the figures for this the other day, and in terms of Opening weekends, it was still good. Just not on a par for an 'expected' blockbuster of this nature. It still fell $10m short of M:I2 opening weekend.

Not seen it yet, but here in the U.S. it's literally headline news how badly it's done. Funny because in the UK I couldnt wait to see it and now I've heard it isn't popular I kinda don't want to anymore. Vicious circle

I'm not following this closely, but from what I've heard Cruise's recent bizarre behavior on some American talk shows has caused his star to fall somewhat with the public. Someone did a poll on it recently--yeah, amazing they don't have more important things to take polls on. But anyway, it said that only 35 percent of the people polled (in the US) have a positive view of Cruise at the moment. Weird, cause he was once very popular. Anyway, I don't know, but maybe that has something to do with the lower than expected box office.

About time I put some input on this...
After seeing it the other week, I took some company who was an avid Tom lover to get their opinion on it, but seeing as she went weak at the knees, said opinion was wasted lol
Personally, I thought it was a great film. Not quite the calibre of M:I2, but good all the same. Phillip Seymour Hoffman played a superb villain though. The reason I say this is that I walked out of the cinema cursing the guys name!
And more to the point, what happened to the theme tune!? I love the Bikit version! Although from what I remember it got some pretty big flack from the last movie.

I actually quite enjoyed this film
I know I liked Mission: Impossible as I rewatched it a week or so ago and still thought it was good, but I remember not liking M:I 2, but I actually can't remember what happened in it, lol
The film was a bit loud though, and very "actiony" but I suppose that's what it's supposed to be like
