So is this a remake of the original or a rmake of the remake?

Ronald D Moore, of Battlestar Galactica fame, has been hired for the task of writing the remake (or is it "companion piece"?) of John Carpenter's classic The Thing.

Who can say at this point? If it was a remake of the Carpenter version then technically wouldn't it be both?
