This review is a bit late. I saw the film on the Friday it came out, but I’ve been busy, so there we go. Hopefully all you lucky folks have seen it by now, if not, you should.
The second Pirates film, Dead Man’s Chest disappointed a lot of people. After the original’s surprising smash-hit status, the second one, which essentially gave us more of the same, but loooooonger, didn’t raise it’s game high enough, and dragged on too long.
Well, if that’s what you thought about that film, you may feel the same about At World’s End. It runs to nearly three hours, and is essentially more of the same. I really enjoyed it though.
When the film begins, Will, Elizabeth and Barbossa (now a good guy) are in Singapore, where we meet a crazy new pirate, Sao-Feng, played by Chow-Yun Fat. Judging by trailers, I’d expected the asian theme to run through a lot of the film, but it doesn’t last long at all.
Whereas Dead Man’s Chest lagged in the middle, this one keeps up a fairly solid pace, and I never felt like I was waiting for something to happen. The cast is excellent again. Pretty much everybody returns from the previous film, and there are one or two new faces (that don’t last long), so it’s a huge cast. Highlights are Geoffrey Rush and of course Johnny Depp, who is once again, crazy as Jack Sparrow. The effects are good too, which is no surprise really.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, it was a very good summer blockbuster. Better, I might add, that Spider-Man 3.
