I'm really not sure how this is going to turn out. With Simon Pegg as Scotty and the guy from Heroes as Spock, I doubt I could take it seriously.
Star Trek
J.J. Abrams' Star Trek is only 14 months away and now the cast is beginning to take shape. The latest characters to be cast are Sulu and Scotty.
Sulu will be played by John Cho (Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle) and Scotty will be played by current favourite Simon Pegg. The pair join Zoe Saldana as Uhura and Anton Yelchin as a young Chekov, the Russian-born navigator, as well as Zachary Quinto as a young Spock.
Enterprise's charismatic captain, Kirk, has yet to be cast, but Chris Pike is rumoured to be in talks.
Outside the crew of the Enterprise, Eric Bana (Hulk) has been cast as Nero, the film's villain.

They're actors, they'll be playing a new role, how is that any harder to accept than any other actor taking on a new role?

I think Pegg is certainly the actor with the most baggage that doesn't fit with the character. As far as I know he hasn't done much that wasn't openly comedic, even his turn in MI3 was slightly the comic relief.
He'll probably be fine, but its hard to picture, as hes also the most physically different from the original actor.

Because you have certain expectations when it comes to certain characters. It's like someone else playing Jean-Luc Picard instead of Patrick Stewart.... it just wouldn't be the Jean-Luc we all know and love and an actor would have to really work to be able to fill those shoes and not leave many fans disappointed.
Something similar applies here I guess although having the original actors play the parts just isn't an option. A lot of people will feel that the actors select won't be able to fill the shoes of the actors preceding them, however, we'll only know if they are as good as the originals when we see the movie itself.

i havent seen anything about anyone to play bones - although as he was much older than the others (except possibly spock), they would automatically feature someone loder.
im just worried about hos theyre going to do this, though - putting any 2 of them together in 1 place is only going to cause all sorts of ret-con problems, so are they going to feature a whole load of other ships?
also, chekov is by far the youngest of the major original crew - surely he would be barely into the academy by the time the rest were seeing their first action?

Well, according to AICN, Chris Pine has accepted the role of James T. Kirk. Other than a bit part in CSI Miami, i don't think i've seen him in anything. His unknown status is at odds with the rest of the cast, but I guess if they needed anyone unknown it was going to be for Kirk. Hopefully he can pull it off.
They come all the way to the right islands for the Scotty role, and end up casting from the wrong end of it!
I'll wait and see how Simon Pegg does (and entertaining as James Doohan was, Pegg can but improve on his brogue) but I'm still not sure about the concept. It's high risk. Either it'll work really, really well, or it'll become a favourite post-pub turkey and kill the franchise off for good. Can't see a middle road here.
I hope it does succeed. Star Trek's lurched about in terms of quality, but cult film/TV is the poorer without it.

Aaaand, Bones it to be played by Karl Urban, of Lord of the Rings, Bourne Supremacy and Doom fame. Well, infamy on that last one.
It's an odd casting, and I can only assume that JJ Abrams doesn't feel he needs to cast like for like. Just have to keep our minds open and go in with as little preconception as possible.

Karl Urban as Bones? Whaaaaat?
Chris Pine was in the Lindsay Lohan vehicle, 'Just My Luck', which has been screening periodically on Sky Comedy for a few months now. He's sort of a young Rob Lowe and in physog terms isn't so far from Kirk.

And I see 'Trekkies' is on Sky Sci-fi/Horror at 3:40pm...

Some more casting news...
Bruce Greenwood (John From Cincinatti) has joined the cast as Christopher Pike, who in the TV show was Captain of the Enterprise before Kirk.
The character of Janice Rand has also been cast and she'll be played by Rachel Nichols (Alias). I'm told that in the early part of the show Janice Rand was the main female crew member, so this could be a bigger role than we think.
And then, a slightly bigger name joining the cast is Winona Ryder, who's playing the human wife of Spock's dad.
EDIT: So, in the show and previous films, the character was the human wife of Spock's dad, but it's being reported that Ryder is playing his Vulcan mother.

Cloverfield comes out soon, and previews have already begun. That means people have seen the Star Trek teaser that airs along with it. A picture of the Enterprise, presumably in space-dock being built or repaired, has been released.
Here
Can't really tell a lot about the ship as a whole from this, but i'm looking forward to seeing the teaser.
