Is this for Destiny?

Most people will book direct with the Thistle as it's the only way you can guarantee to be in the event hotel. Unfortunately around the Thistle there aren't many places within walking distance and the Hoppa buses don't run in conjunction with the party times.

Also there is often the chance that if you book via other companies other than the Starfury block booking that you'll get pushed to the overflow hotel (which is across a dual carriageway I believe!)

As far as I know, the hotel is fully booked up for Destiny (New Year's), so booking away from the hotel itself (ie. via phone) would probably guarantee you NOT getting a room...

To be honest I think this is a line from con organizers as when ive booked with hotels direct without using block booking ive never been transfered to another hotel. And to be honest I think they are more likely to move congoers to another hotel.

It's hard to say really, I always wondered that. It's not as if "other paying guests" would get any better peace and quiet at a convention hotel. It would make more sense to have the con-goers AT the hotel and then the extra partying and chatting wouldn't disturb those not attending.

For other events during the year it can be worthwhile cutting the costs using a different hotel - but at New Year, the expense of catching a taxi or having to remain sober to drive isn't really a saving as such
