Any good reasons for teeth having nerves!
I've just spent over a week in agony, drugged up to the eyeballs on painkillers, waiting for the nerve in my back tooth to die.
Can anyone give me good reasons for nerves in teeth, when they seem to cause so many problems.
I now see the positive sides of root canal work and crowns.

root canal work is sooooooo not fun. It costs a fortune for a start, takes three weeks start to finish, you don't get any anesthetic and it stinks when they do it. bleeeuugggghhhh.
However i do feel that tooth pain the second worse pain in the world after ear ache. You have my sympathy.

You've got my sympathy - I'm having problems with my teeth too. Went for a checkup last week to be told I needed 2 fillings. It was the end of the Easter holiday so I had to book my appointments for the end of July when school had finished, but the dentist had set my teeth off hurting again so I decided to find out when half-term was and try to get in earlier - no such luck...
Me: Do you have any appointments for the week beginning 3rd June?
Receptionist: No, we're completely booked up - it's half term (der)
Me: OK, what time are you open to on a Friday evening?
Her: 3pm (School finishes at 3.30pm)
Me: What about a Thursday evening?
Her: We close at 2pm. (!)
Me: So what is the latest you are open til on an evening?
Her: 5.40pm.
Me: Oh good, can I make an appointment for one evening please?
Her: Sorry, we're completely booked up until August 4th.
Me: OK, I'll leave my appointments as they are then.
Good grief! I've now got to put up with toothache for the next 4 months!
Anyone know any remedies for toothache?

I only ever once had toothache and that was when I was pregnant five years ago. It was one of my wisdom teeth and I remember lying in a ball on the bathroom floor thinking "If I can't cope with toothache what will labour feel like" (Incedently I'd much rather give birth than have toothache) My mother-out-law said that having brandy and swishing it over the tooth would numb the pain so I I had 2 brandys and got drunk instead We also went to out-patients, but their dentist was off duty. Have you tried an emergency dentist? I know they cost a little bit more but rather that than put up with the pain.
My dentist is pretty good at fitting me in at the last minute but then I'm a regular visitor I love going to the dentist. I had my top teeth bleached a few weeks ago and I'm back next week to get caps and veneers done to straighten my bottom teeth and then I'll get them bleached too.
Hope you're not in pain for much longer

I can totally understand the tooth-ache thing! Especially right at this moment cos I am in complete agony! Had all 4 wisdom teeth out yesterday, and can now hardly talk or eat wisdom teeth are the WORST! mine weren't even nearly growing out of my gum so i'm all swelled and cut and stitched and it's just horrible! i hate teeth!
Thinking of doing what my dad did and having them ALL taken out and just getting false ones! Saves all the trouble!
Hope you feel better soon, keep taking the painkillers! they really do help! and master the art of eating with your front teeth <--- i can now eat toast in very little soggy bits!

Thanks for the sympathy guys! It all seems to have settled down to a bearable level for now (touch wood) so hopefully I'll be OK until July. If not, then I will definitely have to look for an emergency dentist.
OUCH!!, been there done that, I had my wisdom teeth growing into the backs of my others, almost horizontal, they were sorted 10year ago thankfully. It was a general anistetic, which I reacted to, tongue swelled up couldn't breath, so the greatest of sympathy to you. With my recent bother I put some of my previous experience into action, making mince casserole in bulk, and then freezing it and re-heating it with little pasta (meant for soups etc.)or rice. A little more interesting than custard, rice pudding, and various soup.

Hints if needed, I found gargling with salt water helped the pain and cleaned the scars. Also soluble asprin was good.Hope it gets better soon.
Thanks for all the well wishes too, I think the nerve in my tooth is finally giving up the battle and nearly dead. I'm just getting back to more regular food, gingerly eating around about 5 temporary fillings, praying they'll hold. I've now just got the root canal work etc. to look forward to.
Teeth can really be a pain
I hope that work goes smoothly for you SS. Sounds really bad & painful what you guys are all going through.
I had teeth out for a brace when I was at school - it was 6 under general anaesthetic (would have been 7 but I pulled 1 out myself that morning!).
I don't envy any of you the pain, as someone else said I also rate tooth pain second only to ear ache which is sheer hell on earth
Feel better soon y'all!
