Nit Nurse Petition

Headlice have always been a problem and are still causing grief when there really is no need. Effective and regular checking then swift treatment would eventually eradicate the problem, but it seems a lot of schools are no longer doing any kind of checks causing more and more outbreaks and spreading the problem around.

A colleague told me this morning there was a story in yesterdays 'Sun' about Tess Culnane from Kent, a Grandmother who has started a petition to bring back the good old Nit Nurse to schools. I always remember there being one, and can't actually find a good reason why they stopped being around.

ICK!!! I hate headlice. *Touch wood* since Sam has been at school he hasn't had them, but when he was at the college creche he kept catching them off all the grubby kids who's parents wouldn't de-nit them. At some points I was doing his hair up to 3 times a week and nit stuff is not cheap

Luckily Billy had then only once and has not had them in 2 years.

I'm all for the nit nurse being re-introduced. At Sams school they're not even allowed to tell the parents of children who have them, they just send out a general letter asking mums to check their childrens hair. I would rather they come up to me if Sam had them and let me know so I could deal with it immeadiatly.

I hate the ickle things, last year I went through a stage of having to do my kids so regularly it got beyond a joke. Like you T my kids school only sends of letters occasionaly to say that a case has been reported in their class and to check your childs hair. I know in the school my children are going to they are not allowed to check the kids hair, its crazy... I never had nits once when I was at school and we had a nit nurse, I for one will be signing the petition

my kids school only sends of letters occasionaly to say that a case has been reported in their class and to check your childs hair. I know in the school my children are going to they are not allowed to check the kids hair, its crazy...

My school sends out these standard notes when I find live nits in a childs hair (doesn't mean the parents check though). If I find lice they are sent home immediately. It's a school policy.

The parents accept that and know that if I send their child home they *will* be checked the next day. But I can't check 200+ heads daily, and live nits *will* hatch eventually, and then spread. Parents don't seem to realise that eggs need treating to prevent lice.

Every school should have someone checking but not many are willing to do it. I started checking the school (at their request) when my daughter went there as I didn't want her to catch them, and I carried on officially when I saw how big a problem it was.

A local nit nurse would be great!

We are not allowed to send a child home if they have nits. All the staff disagree, however its not a school policy and so there isnot much we can do about it. It's very unfair for the parents who do regularly check and treat their children and the rest of the families hair, but unless *everybody* does it, they just go into school and come hom ewith more the next day.

Every school should have someone checking but not many are willing to do it.

..or are legally allowed to as I've said.

Local schools have been campaigning for months about this to the authority to no avail. Even the media have been involved.
However, I shall certainly be passing out this email address!

A good alternative to teh Nit nurse is what my little sisters school does. They train parents to check the kids hair for nits and these trained parents come into the school every fortnight to look for nits.

Its very effective and the checking is definately more frequent than nit nurse checking was when i was at school!

And its cheaper too

We had a nit-nurse when I was at school. It was really cool! I always used to look forward to her coming round. I don't know why but someone running their fingers through my hair just feels sooooooooooo good. So good in fact that I paid for it on the snog-a-thon night!!!!

i'm not bothered as mature men can't get nits, something to do with the hair being different, we can only get lice and they can't lay eggs in our hair so they only stay around for a little time and then either die or jump to another head as ours is useless to them. but i had nits as a kid and ouch i hated the metal comb thing.

I remember at school we always had the Nit Nurse coming round I think it was about once a term.

Mum used to buy this really nasty smelling shampoo stuff which got rid of them but is probably banned today as being too toxic or something.

I think the schools should have the checks done & parents should use whatever it is nowadays that gets rid of them as the fleas pass to the rest of the family & then can make 'the jump' into work places.

Never heard of the adult male hair being useless to them as I thought it was blood they were after?

Is this perhaps another myth like the one that said - 'You can only get fleas if you have clean hair so it isn't that shameful if you get them' ?

the lice can drink male blood but jsut can't lay eggs in it, look it up online or talk to an expert they'll tell you. the odd adult male can get nits but it isn't all that likely.

Miss Corrupt That deaf, dumb and blind kid sure plays a mean pinball!

I never had a nit in my head in junior school, and I always had a nit nurse. But when I went to senior school, we didn't have one and last year I had nits.

They were hard to get rid of, as so many people in my class have them, and half of them dont even care! But i've been nit free for over 10 months, so i'm very pleased now

yeuch, i never rest my head on anyones shoulder now or get to close, coz I am so worried of catching them.

Bring back the nit nurse is what i say!
