Hairdressers

I had the most traumatic visit to the hairdressers yesterday. My normal hairdresser was on maternity leave, so I said I didn't mind who did my hair, I was only having a trim anyway. Last time I had my hair cut I really loved it so I wanted to keep the same style. I said this to the new hairdresser but when I put my glasses back on to have a look it was a completely different style. I didn't know what to do so I just went to pay, and then she said it was Â£11 more than I normally pay - apparently my usual hairdresser is only a junior stylist and she's a senior stylist. She ended up splitting the difference, but then I walked out and saw my reflection in a shop window and was in tears, so I went back and she had gone but another hairdresser tried to sort it out - it looks better than it did but it's still not right

I really wanted it to look good because we have my grandparents' Diamond Wedding party next weekend and I wanted to look my best. Now I just want to cry every time I look in a mirror

And the way it is if I tried to get it sorted out properly it would end up *really* short, which isn't what I want. So I'm not sure what to do, apart from the fact that there's no way I'm ever going back to that salon!

Some hairdressers do seem to think that a person's hair is a blank canvass onw hich they can 'express' themselves and ignore totally what the customer actually wants.

I know it's not much comfort but, at least the hair will grow and you can get it styled again in a few weeks back to how you want it. I know it currently isn't how you want it but try not to let it spoil the party.

I always maintain that the most powerful person in the world is not the US president, but his barber. After all if the guy turns up to a summit meeting with terrible hair, no one will take himseriously

But I really sympathise White Hart, I've had the bad hair cut before (back when I actually had my hair cut

) and there's almost nothing worse that can happen on a day to day basis to make you feel so low, as it can take so long for it to grow out to get it cut again this time something like you wanted

Can you not arrange to see the junior stylist and ask what she normally does to your hair and whether she can modify the incorrect style?

The only time something went wrong with my hair was years ago when the hairdresser tried to convince me that my perm had taken lovely even though it was a pitiful flat mess. I asked for a second opinion from another of the hairstylists and she suggested coming back the next day and sitting in the chair for another 4 hours. Luckily it worked better the second time and was fortunate to last for ages.

I do have a worry about hairdressers cutting my hair too short and then hating it so I tend to be very boring with my hair. I find hairdressers extremely scary (more so than dentists!) and I tend not to go too often because of it which is where long hair comes in handy as if it was short I'd have to go more often to keep it styled

At the moment I'm walking around with a scarf tied Alice band fashion around my head - believe me it looks better!!

Sadly, she's on maternity leave, so it'll be a while. I know that several people I know have been to another stylist nearby and said good things about it, so I'm going to call them tomorrow and see if I can get an appointment on Saturday and see if they can at least reshape it. Even if it's shorter than I wanted, at least it'll look vaguely like me!!

The one good thing - at least it's six months till my wedding, so it should grow back - I won't have to have wedding photos with awful hair

Nutty Bat Not bitter, just twisted

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago, although I had seen the same stylist the previous time and been really happy. I told her this, and said I'd like it as it was before. Then, just as she was nearly done, she said she'd done it a bit different - and in ways that I'd already said I didn't like. When I complained she said what was the point of coming to have my hair cut if I wanted it done the same way each time, and said she'd put her 'heart and soul' into it. Not only that, she kept getting my name wrong, and followed me out onto the street and accused me of not having paid! I had of course. Needless to say, I also left feeling traumatised and so I wrote a detailed letter of complaint to the manager and have been offered a free cut and blow dry by a top stylist, which I may take up - so long as I can go on that other hairdresser's day off! What is it with these prima donna stylists?! I'm just grateful that hair does grow back and that this woman didn't decide on tattooing as a career!

A similar thing happened to me once - the thing is, you're probably very focused on how wrong you think it is. It's probably nowhere near that bad.
Given that new haircuts never look that good at first, maybe you should give it a while - maybe it will (pardon the expression) grow on you

excuse the thick moment! you clearly said so in your post. Hope the other hairdressers can fix you up but its a nuisance having to pay again

although I suspect you are rather worried about going back to complain in case they make it worse

I hate hairdressers but I like experimenting

The best thing to do is if you're still not happy after you have complained to the manager/owner then you can take it further as they should be recognised by some hairdressing code of conduct/alliance/etc

i think i've been pretty luck hairdresser wise. I satyed with the same stylist for 14 years when i lived in Middlesbrough aand when we moved i found another guy who was really good. (He does the whole family)

The only hair disaster i've had that wasn't self inflicted (i've lost count of the number of times i've botched a home dye job!)was when a friend was doing my hair. He was training to be a hairdresser and needed to do loads of practice to pass his course. I volunteered and got my hair done in a super top salon for a fiver

coz it normally wouyld have cost 70 - 80 quid ) He usually did a great job and i had amazingly fab cut and wacky colours for two years - then - just before graduation he managed to give me a dirty great pidgeon poo fringe - i looked like a right charver. It was hideous and i couldn't complain coz it was a mate

Hope you get it all sorted.

I know how you feel. I once went to a new hairdressers and she started to cut my hair without actually asking what I wanted - I had to grab her hand and stop her! Needless to say, the finished result was dreadful and nothing like I'd asked for. It was too short to be restyled but it only took a few weeks before I could get it done somewhere else. Perhaps you could use this as an opportunity to try out a new style if you go to a different hairdresser.

Aaaawwwwww! Poor thing. Never really had a bad experience in the hairdressers. They usually have to sort out the mess I make when I decide to trim my fringe myself

I still have 2 odd sticky out bits which drive me mad but have to wait for them to grow into the rest of my hair.

I know what you mean about about going to other sylists 'tho. I see the same one every week when I go to get mine washed and blow dryed (she's the only one that can get it as straight as I like it) but last week I had it done by someone else who didn't do it quite as well 'cos my usual girl was off sick. Still it only 'cos me Â£10 so it wasn't the end of the world. Hope you get it sorted out soon White Hart

I've had this in the past too, but now I get round it by telling them exactly what I don't want, and getting them to tell me back what it is I've asked for (in a nice way, obviously). This seems to work.

Still, doesn't help you at the moment, but I'm sure you don't look half as bad as you think you do - it's always a shock when your hair is different.

Hope the restyling and the party both go great

you know i think a hair cut always looks worse just after you've had it cut, wait a week or so, and you might even start to like it.

I always go to the same hairdresser and can totally relate to all those women that follow hairdressers around.

Ever since one cut of my really long hair for a short bob!

It's growing back now but it's taken ages. Like the others have said it's probably not as bad as you think and it will grow back. (Eventually)

Well, I'm feeling a lot better about it today. Yesterday it felt like looking in the mirror to see a huge black eye - really, really disfiguring. I washed it this morning and managed to dry it more in the shape I was used to (couldn't do a thing with it yesterday), and the emotional impact is more like a huge zit. I think I can live with this for a few weeks, and it'll be easier to get back to the style I want once it's longer. Otherwise it's going to be much shorter than I want
