Noisy neighbours - advice needed please.

I'm at my wit's end with noisy neighbours next door. They moved in about 4 weeks ago, and since then my life's been a misery. Every night they keep me awake with shouting, laughing, swearing, banging and playing loud music, sometimes until 2 or 3am. Last night they woke me with music at 3.50am! It's no joke, especially when I have to get up for work at 6.30 am.

Now, I know I should just complain to the letting agency that owns their house, but I'm rather a timid person. The house on the other side of them is empty, so they would know that it was me who complained. Also, from what I've heard, they are definitely drug users and possibly dealers also. I have not met them but they are extremely agressive, with every other word being a swear word. I am scared that if I asked them to be more considerate, they would swear at me, make even more noise, or even do something to me or my house. I wouldn't put anything past them to be honest, especially if they are high on something.

I'm in this house until the end of July, and I know it's only a few weeks, but believe me, a few weeks can seem like a very long time when you're putting up with this nearly every night. I work long hours in a school and need to be rested, and quite frankly I feel like I'm being driven slowly mad by all this. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do? I considered anonymously telling the police about the drugs, but my parents thought it was too risky and they would know it was me who said something. Please help me!

Hmmm a tricky situation.

I've had dealings with noisy neighbours but that was mainly loud music and I got Environmental Health involved.

It may be an idea to let the agency know though as they would be in breach of contract perhaps?

usually takes weeks to get anything doen in these situations. If you complain they'll tell you to make a log and go back in a couple of weeks. Unfortunately i think you'll just have to grin and bear it

God!!Don't do that. If they were to find out it was you then you would be in serious trouble. Besides have you any proof? I think the best bet is to go to the letting agency and let them sort it out. You could ask them to be discreet when handling the matter.

They have drugs you say... well if you can't beat them, oh so definatly join them

Sorry, trying to put a happy face on the situation. But definatly don't complain to the cops, I'd just say get a chemist to prescribe sleeping pills... more druggy fun

The flat I frist lived in was in a house the house next door was also flats. In that house we had drug dealers and prositutes, they generaly kept themselves to themselves but when I started to get knocks on my door from men saying "I called earlier" I wasn't going to take anymore. We did call the police and they raided the place , the guy who ran it all knew that we had done it and came threatening. Gary and our neighbour eneded up being threatned with having our windows smashed in etc , at this I went mad at this guy as I had Daniel then who was only 5 months old at the time.

It all eneded ok , nothing happened apart from glares whenever we crossed paths but we were lucky and also my Ex is a big lad , if you can just try and bare with it for the few weeks you have left there sometimes it really isnt worth the grief you'll get

We had neighbours like this once - we lived in the first floor flat and they were in the ground floor. Mostly it was annoying but not too bad, then they had a party - they came home at about 12.30, when I was in bed, played really loud music... Tim had been out doing a quiz, I called him, called again an hour later when it still wasn't any better... he came back and tried to ask them to turn it down and they were really agressive - and he's six foot two!! We went to bed about 4.30, and the worst thing was they were playing an album I love - the Pixies 'Dolittle' - so you could fill in the gaps in the bassline coming through the floor. I ended up going to work and leaving after half an hour to get some sleep - not good!!!

So, I *totally* empathise!! Sadly, we never found a real solution, luckily the guy moved out soon after. I hope you can sort something out! Have you tried earplugs? It may help a bit anyway

u could always try the old do the same thing to them, wait until theyve gone to bed and blare out your own music and bang on the walls and stuff, im sure once they see what its like they'll stop doin it!

willow_fantastico if thats an otter, i'm from brighton!!

we had that problem in my old house, i always found banging on the wall with a large hammer worked well. though i sometimes really wanted to go downstairs and throw a brick through thier window, don't think it would have help but it would sure have been fun!

I can only offer sympathy, I'm afraid. But it strikes me as a depressing state of affairs when you have to put up with this for fear of reprisals.

RedWitch It's the so-called 'normal' guys that always let you down. Sickos never scare me. At least they're committed.

One of our lovely legally trained members will be able to confirm this or correct me, but isn't excessive noise after 11.30 pm something you can report to the police? If they're that loud, it could have been anyone reporting them...

And yeah, I totally sympathise, I used to live next door to a bunch of stoodents, one of whom thought he was a 'Sundissential' DJ...

Thanks for all your advice and sympathy - it really made me feel that I wasn't alone with this problem - thanks guys.
I have been keeping a record of the noise and may still go and complain to the letting agency, but I'd rather just sit it out if I can (without having a nervous breakdown in the meanwhile!) Only just over 11 weeks to go!!!

It may not be much but maybe you could just politely asked them to keep it down at night at least then they would know you had a problem with the noise. Last christmas me and my housemates threw a house party problem was about 80 ppl turned up and it didn't end until 3:30. The neighbours complained to the land lords but if they had come over and told us how bothered they were by it we would of turned it down (We did also tell them in advance that we were having one). The only problem in your situation is if you complained to them and then the letting agency who then chuck them out they would no it was you. But if your not going to complain to the police or the letting agency then i recomm at least telling them (politely) how much it bothers you.
