I could never mosh to the mighty Linkin Park. It's more of an apoplectic fit, while screaming what I believe to be the lyrics to any naive passer-by.

They can improve confidence. before i started learning i just did the two setp shuffle (you know, side tap, side tap). Now i'm all hippy and arms all over the place. This isnt necessarly an improvement mind you

You don't need lessons - you need to just stop caring about what someone else might think of you.
DonÂ’t get me wrong, if you want to learn very specific forms of dancing (tango, salsa, jive, whatever) then lessons are essential. Or even if you want to be a bit more limber or imaginative if your moves, then again lessons are a good idea.
But before any of that you need to get over the idea that dancing can be right or wrong. Yes, there are people who try to hard, or are seriously out of step with the rhythm, but this is usually because they are either trying to impress someone (or anyone) or because they are scared of being noticed and thought of as a bit of a prat. As long as you think like this then you will look like a prat.
Music and dancing are about self-expression. What you should be concentrating on is how the music (and especially the rhythm) make you feel, and to move accordingly. If other people think you look daft then thatÂ’s their problem. As long as you are doing what feels natural and are enjoying yourself then everyone else should go take a running jump. Hence my advise to Spike.
Failing that, thereÂ’s always the good olÂ’ standby of Airguitar, and HeadbangingÂ…

Every night out i say to myself, No head banging. My neck hurts terribly the next day and Mum tells me scare stories of braking my neck that way.

And every time i go out... i ignore it and wake up in pain again the next morning
One day I'l learn.
No! That's no fun. Sounds far too sensible and we all know that can never be good for you.
