whats that got to do with the price of...

glasses!

Need top have a small rant at the price of spectacles. Grrr.
I've been getting severe headaches of late and i wondered if it might have anything to do with my glasses being out of date. So, i went to have the free eyetest (Courtesy of GNL coz i'm a VDU user) and sure enough. I need new glasses - which means I also need new prescription sunglasses too as i'm planning on learning to drive later in the summer.

The *wonderful* people i work for have a discount scheem with an opticion in town, but this opticion is the soty of place David Beckham wouyld go if he wanted new giggs. They even do lazer eye surgery there. So, if i get my glasses from there they will cost upwards of Â£150 pounds and if i want Sunglasses as well it'll be Â£250!!!!

I think its shocking that glasses cost so much, after all they're tiny! I could go to Specsavers and get 4 pairs of glasses with ultra lite, scratch resistant ant glare lenses for that much.

Ahem - ok rant over. So i'm gonna go to Specsavers anyway but i'll still be a Â£100 job at least. why am i afflicted with the poor sight?????? WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!

I'm not an expert on Health & Safety by any means, but I believe the company has to contribute if you are a regular vdu user, and the strain is due to that. They can't just restrict you to a single supplier either.

Can any H&S experts confirm this?

If you have a local asda store with an optician's in you can get budget glasses there. My pair cost Â£50.

They make me look like a librarian but that was the "look" when i got them.

I get an NHS voucher for mine until I`m 18 i think ,but i think specsavers prices are quite fair and theres a good range. I hate glasses ive had them since i was about 8 or 9 but im too much of a wimp to even consider laser treatment, and contact lenses make me all migrainey!!

Glasses are *way* too expensive

Specsavers is a good bet though because they usually do a free pair of sunglasses when you buy normal glasses

Employers are only obliged to provide spectacles if you need special ones for VDU work. If you're short-sighted normally then no such luck

Deterioration is unlikely to be due to VDU use, short sight has a tendency to get worse anyway. (Last time I realised new glasses it was because I realised I couldn't read roadsigns!!)

I got my glasses from Specsavers and they cost me just under Â£90.00, so with the eye test was Â£108.00 or thereabouts.. it's true though, to get nice fashionable glasses, they cost a fortune!
