To buy or not to buy (new car coming up)

Ok well I spent most of today looking round and test driving cars

I'm almost 100% sure what I'm going to go for well I think Hence the Topic

After weighing up all the costs etc etc I'm thinking of going for a brand new Polo (nope Spike not a mint with a hole)

The deal being I get a Â£9,495 car for Â£8,495 (basicaly I get a higher spec for the same price as a lower spec because they are altering the spec's if you get my drift)
Now for that I get a three year warrently including full service, maintance and tyre cover, one years tax , and im buying it over a three year period and then trading it back in with a gurantee of not losing any money.

The other option I have is to go for a used car , bigger (more room for kiddies) etc etc . But then also have the worry if something goes wrong and I have to pay out for it

So what ya think guys should I go for the new one?
And does anyone have any experence with VW as I've always had Volvos before ?

I've only ever driven Fords or Vauxhalls....

But just out of interest - have you thought of looking at Jamjar.com for a new car - they do have some really good deals and the staff are friendly.

We had dealings with them before Len bought his Saxo

I only drove a VW once and I ended up crashing it

It was quite nice to drive up to that point though!

With a deal like that it probably makes sense to go for the new car, especially if you'd be really stranded if something went wrong. The only thing I'd say you should consider carefully is the size - Polos are pretty ickle, and kids grow a fair bit in 3 years - you don't want a car that ends up being too small before you can trade it back in! A 'nearly new' car only needs to be about 6 months old to be a lot cheaper and although you wouldn't have all the perks of the deal I think you'd still have the remainder of the manufacturer's warranty.

The Polo seems like a good idea VW's are good reliable cars, the warranty and free servicing will save you a fair bit (the servicing at least about Â£600 in my opinion) the only problem I see is the space for the kids, As said above you may be better off with a nearly new about six months old, a lot of these may have been barely driven anyway, you may not get the fringe benefits but may end up with a bigger car for the money and probably still get the remainder of the warranty depending on make.

And make sure you get stuff such as free servicing in writing.

I test drove a Polo a few years ago and it was very nice to drive, although a little slow. My parents used to drive Volkswagons and they were always very solid.

My sister's just got a brand new Corsa. It was a similar price to the car you're looking at and came with allsorts of goodies, including a CD player and 3 years interest free credit

Thanks for the advice guys , I know what your saying about the size and the kids and that was one of my concerns in an ideal world I'd go straight for a people carrier (which is what I intend to go for in three years) but I just can't afford one right now
Im glad a few of you have had dealings with VW though because as I said I've never had any so that helps , and yes DJ was very nice to drive ( and I didn't scare the salesman too much)

She got rid of a 20 year old Polo when she bought it!

VW's are great - excellent re-sale value - pricey on the servicing - but if you are getting that thrown in - then I'd say - Go for it!

Ooooh my favorite topic cars!!

I brought my car two years ago on exactly the same deal that you are describing and it is well worth it. New cars are just so much more reliable that second hand ones and you get all the added bonuses like free tax, insurance CD player and all that.

Not always the case. I've heard horror stories of people who have to keep taking their new car back to the dealer because of constant problems with them.

And my F-reg Fiat Uno did 14,000 miles last year with no problems driving the length and breadth of the country.

All depends on how lucky you are I guess

Got to agree with whistler here (and trust me I work in the warranty department of a car dealership) we even have had to replace gearboxes and engines a few weeks after a car has gone out. They are just as likely to have problems, it just they are usually covered by a warranty if new or nearly new.

A well maintained car can run for years.

Ooh, new cars!

Having sobbed for weeks that I have to get rid of my knackered old Nova, we went to look at cars today and we've put a deposit on one! Yay! It's a very lovely metallic dark green Astra with power steering and electric windows - and electric wing mirrors, which I'm just never going to tire of!!

And it accelerates like a - um, how to say this politely? - thing that accelerates very fast, which is a far cry from Mark's Sierra which I've been driving for a while (like driving a barge full of porridge, that one!) Picking it up next Saturday,can't wait!!

incidentally, if anyone out there is good at welding and wants a nice cheap car, get in touch! The Nova is pretty sound mechanically, it's just got lots of rust... <hopeful grin but not holding my breath>

Not a constant problem, but my wipers suddenly stopped working on my new focus on a dual carriageway in the middle of a hail storm. I was left not being able to see 3 foot in front of me so had to pull into a very handy layby

Had to call the RAC who couldn't fix it, but got me home and advised me to contact the ford garage the next morning. I did just that and had them treating me like a moron who couldn't work a pair of wipers! Ended up giving them a mouthful - and now its fixed

Vinnie Just because you don't beleive in something, doesn't mean it's not true.

I've got my new car on order with Virgincars.
Same warranty and spec as UK dealer but 2grand cheaper.
Only problem is the delivery time , end of august

But it leaves me with my SoftTop Jeep for the summer.

except the Catalytic converter has just gone and thats 500quid to get fixed.
