Homebase is full of Union Jacks at the moment. Our local market has Union Jacks and the English flag. Market stalls seem to be the best place to pick them up.

White Hart, backing up on Sydney's post, studies into football hooliganism shows their relationship to football to be parasitic rather than them being actual fans. Football hooligans love two things - violence and tribalism. What football does is give them the tribal identity they want, from the colour of a shirt to a national flag. The violence hasn't occurred inside a (British) stadium for a long time. Most of the organized violence is done by groups who have no interest in watching football, never mind supporting a side. They don't care who wins. They don't care about the trouble they put the club in, or the general damage they cause. They're mindless thugs. Football isn't the cause of the problem but the victim of it.
The problem is the violent aspects of our society, and the amount of nationalism - not whether we win a game of football.
Although I would disagree with any idea that football is ONLY a game - it's a way of life.

My 5 year old came home with a letter today saying that all children must be in school for 9am tomorrow Spoilsports!
However his teacher has a TV in their little library and she said what the Head doesn't know won't hurt her

My sister's school is having a super early breakfast club so that they can come in early to watch it or watch some at home then carry on watching at school. Lets face it I bet a lot of parents will just keep their children off all day because of that letter.

Sorry to be picky but its a little pet hate of mine... They are only called a Union Jack if they are on a flag pole. If they aren't on a proper flag pole then its the Union Flag.

My kids brought a letter home saying that they were holding a breakfast club starting at 8am and the kids could watch the match, but also it states on the letter that any child arriving at school after 930am , will be getting a 30 min detention after school wed.

The thing that annoys me is that the school won't allow Sean to go to the breakfast club so he has to miss half the match
Just wangled it so the mother-outlaw will take him to school tomorrow She can deal with the tantrums while I'll be cheering on England in my PJs
Sorry, I was just trying to be helpful.

Some of the small ones are on those little stick things if that counts?!
This is an England team, why would anyone want a Union Flag? If it was a British team, I could understand, but England? Get a white sheet and paint a red cross on it. Do you see Union Flags at Scotland games?
But then I also don't like seeing England play in blue for the same reason. Just seems to be part of the assumption that England=Britain (see Lewis' comments after beating the high pitched rapist).

I always though that Union Flag was the correct name, and that the Union Jack was the the one flown on the backs of British naval vessels, with the UF occupying a quarter of the material. No way am I an authority, tho
Perhaps if the national team win the Cup, this place should be re-named 'Eng-er-land'...

I think we were very lucky to get through that. Nigeria totally out classed us, but we're through so YAY!!!
I meant the game as a whole, Nigeria were fighting/saving face really well, and that's what was good.

Hmmm, wouldn't say they totally outclassed us. England knew that a point would get them through. It was all about the result. This was never going to be like against Argentina and, if you thought it would be, then you were kidding yourselves. They played the game with a tactic in mind. Sit back and defend while waiting our chance in attack. If they had gone all out in attack, that would have left them open to counter attacks and would have sapped their energy a lot sooner than it did. So, what would you prefer? An attacking game where there were goals galore and we lost one at the death and be eliminated? Or play to qualify for the second round?

Denmark are not going to be a soft touch.
I do think our boys played some good attacking football in places though.
I listened to the first half in the car on the way to work (and my driving was pobably a bit erratic!) then in the staff restaurant for the second half.
GO ENGERRRRRRLAND
