Which is pretty much what happened today. Don't hold the media responsible for the whole country. We can't tell newspapers what to write - and d'you think the Scotsman and the Herald wouldn't be reacting in the same way as English quality papers have been if it were Scotland instead???

when we played Brazil at France 98 in the tournament opener there wasn't one person in Scotland who thought we would win that game. When we scored the whole country shook and for 28 minutes we thought that we might actually beat them...then of course they proved too strong for us and ended up beating us 2-1.
There's such a thing as a positive attitude. We could have all been miserable and gone - oh well we're not going to win - why bother. But instead there was a bit of excitement and looking forward to the game and thinking well "what if...?"
Plus we did have a good chance against Brazil - they haven't been playing up to their usual standard throughout the tournament and given a different referee and a couple fewer dives we may have at least forced the game to extra time.
And i really have to mention this somewhere...
Ravaldo and his "arragh arragh i've been so deeply injured and can't possibly continue [until the free kick is given at least]" He got a trailing finger in the face - it was nowhere near his eyes and his nose obviously wasn't damaged yet he was rolling round like Heskey had broken it. That sort of behavior really does my head in whether ist used against us or used in matches i feel neutral about.

For as long as I've been following football I've remembered little else other than media castigation of the England team, whether it be for performances on the pitch, late night drinking/kebab sessions or whatever.

People always ask why the other home nations don't support England if their teams aren't their and the reason is primarily to do with the media and their 'we're gonna win this easy' attitude.
After two games of the qualifying tournament we were bottom of the group with only one point, and most of the English press were convinced we were out already, or at the very least admitting it would take a miracle for us to reach the finals.
When the finals groups were drawn there weren't many in the media who predicted that England would get out of the group, let alone win the whole thing!
Yes, there may be a lot of coverage of the England team, and they may have got a little excited as we were at the quater final stage with many of the favourites out, but to say it's all of the 'we're gonna win easy' ilk is a gross overstatement. I don't know of another country in the world where the media shows so little pride in their national teams
I've been too destraught to post!!! Well I knew that Brazil were gonna beat us! And I feel SO bad for Seaman. Don't worry my Arsenal Boyo. I still love u. The lap of honour was very moving apparently!
I am darn proud to be English and these are the times I am pleased we have SUCH a great team.
And I hate our press, could they be any less sympathetic towards Seaman! Give the bloke a break!
