uh, cabin crew i've encountered have all been pleasant....
Question for survey: What do you think of air cabin crew?
I'd be very grateful if you could answer this question for a survey I'm doing!
eg: Are they simply "trolley dollies" handing out drinks and selling duty free and flying off to glamourous destinations?
OR
are they highly trained safety professionals? Do current affairs influence your view? ie the American flight attendants on 11th September who tried in vain to stop the terroists onboard the flights.
Did the ITV programme "Confessions of an air steward" influence your opinion?
Would you like to be cabin crew?
Thanks for your help everyone!
do different cabin crew at different airline appear different to you? eg some airlines are more professional than others?
Your experience with cabin crew. Do you find them generally helpful and polite or moody and unhelpful?
thanks again.

GO Cabin crew - lovely.
EasyJet - crap, moody and stressed.
BA - very professional.
Virgin - also very professional and a bit friendlier than BA

Air Cabin Crew in my view are little more than mobile bar staff. I'm sure they do get an above average level of training in safety and emergancy procedures but thankfully are rarely presented with an opportunity to use it.
I think brawny passengers are usually more use in "persuading" would be trouble makers to sit down and shut up although the changes to the laws that have recently come into place help. I once read a story in the news where passenger was suffering from air rage and the cabin staff were powerless to get him to calm down. Another passenger on the flight, who just happened to be a 250lb Navy SEAL managed to get the irate fellow to sit down and be quiet As things stand at the moment it's painfully obvious that cabin staff are not enough to prevent hijacking, maybe there should be a Navy SEAL on every flight ?!?!? ( I thik Israeli Airlines actually have an armed Mossad agent on their flights but that could just be a rumour, I've neverflown with them)
Having said that all the air stewarding staff I've encountered have been very professional and courteous and manage to keep me from climbing the walls and I hate flying. So they do their job very well, but aside from thier role in a potential crash situation, which I've never encountered, I don't think they contribute more than a pseudo authority figure in terms of passenger safety.
And no I'd hate to be a member of a cabin crew.

United Airlines cabin crew, on a trip to America, were the friendliest bunch of people I could have asked for.
Anything I wanted to know, they told me as best they could. When I couldn't work the sound system they were incredibly helpful.
As I was travelling alone, when I wanted to head off to the bathroom, one of them stayed and watched my carry on bag and duty free goods for me till I came back.
They were professional and polite. And they made me feel safe and secure.

I know that Cabin Crew have some really ridiculous restrictions placed on them within their job. i.e. one firm makes all the women wear pink lipstick. If you are wearing anything that does not consitute their idea of pink then yu have to take it off.
Plus they do come up for loads of crap too. one girl i work with used to work for an airline and she got slammed against the side of the plane by one massive hulking bloke once!!!
I really liked that ITV programme it made me laugh. Lets face it cabin crew do have a hard (and boring) job to do and they get ridiculed because of peoples perceptions. i found that programme balenced and informative and let them put right a few misguided ideas (and reinforced some of the stereotypes)
hope that helps a little

I really think it depends on the person, like in any job you get professional people and unprofessional people. Those who care about the passengers and are happy in their jobs and then those who are in it for the free travel and couldn't give a stuff.
As others have said it depends on the airline as well some training programs are more vigorous and thorough than others.
On a whole they put up with a lot, long hours on their feet, screaming kids, rude passengers, varicose veins, unsociable hours and VERY poor pay. It was something I looked into doing a while back, but the bad parts of the job far outweigh the good bits so I decided to give it up and stay with my feet firmly on the ground!

BA- generally quite good, you get the odd evil one but all very nice. My uncle was an air steward with them for a while and he is very patient, intelligent and calm.
Southwest (American company for internall US flights only) -very sweet old American OAPs
Virgin- definetly the best, happy fun and very helpful.
United Airlines- very nice even if their not very intelligent they were still quite good.
Delta- Terrible, awful and evil!
American Airlines- just the same, unhelpful and very rude. But some of them were alright.
KLM UK: OK not incredibly wonderful but the flights are normally average prices so you get what you pay for.
GO: same, didn't find them very friendly or helpful.
And a company I flew to Spain with last year, can't remember what its called, Spain Air? Something like that: They're OK, not too good on English but bearable for short flights.
[edit: forgot to add some other companies]
I generally think that Cabin Crew do a very very hard job and in general are under-paid. I think it depends on the country aswell, I always find British cabin crew really sweet and friendly. The Dutch have very scary old men in their cabin crew. And American's seem to be quite friendly but as the flight progresses they get quite aggitated.
But IMO, I think it definetly depends on the person, not what company or what nationality they are. On one flight I think your not gonna get perfectly tempered staff and not one mean one!
