I don't think I have any strange superstitions...not really bothered about them really. I'm quite happy to walk under ladders and stuff like that

I'm not superstitious at all - i won't walk under a ladder when theres someone up it, but thats just common sense

To be honest i'm a bit dim about superstitions i only know the big ones - whats the significance of walking over three drains?

although when i break one of the "rules" it does occur to me. Nothing nasty has ever happened as a result tho.

I won't walk under ladders under any circumstances, or open an umbrella indoors or place new shoes on a table.

When Hannah was in the SCBU, everytime, just before we'd leave her, i used to say "Be a good girl for the nurses".. I said it one time to her when she was pretty poorly at eight days old, just after i'd held her for the first time, and she got better and better, so i kept saying it and she's fine now.

I used to be really superstitious, wouldn't walk under ladders or scaffolding, I used to salute magpies if there was one of them.

I'm not as bad now, when I see one magpie, I say to myself, yeah and? but then I give myself away coz I get dead excited when I see 2

I'm terrible ... itchy hands (rub on wood) spilled salt (over left shoulder) broken mirrors etc etc etc

Superstitious? Nah. Too much of an empiricist for that.

But that doesn't mean I don't act in a superstitious manner. If I see a lone magpie I'll do the 'hello, Mr Magpie' bit. But then I always associate that with my grandma. Doesn't mean I think it'll change anything, I just like the association. Same goes for touching wood (usually by tapping my forehead) and the occasional throwing of salt over shoulder.

However, when it comes to football I can get very silly. I always have to wear a Leeds shirt when they're playing (even if it's under a work shirt). I have lucky pubs, I have to drink bitter when the games on (for England and Leeds). During the world cup I refused to shave until England were knocked out. I have no belief that these actions change anything, but by doing them I find I feel a sense of .. involvement. To me, it's just part of the fun of being a football fan.

JayJay, you sound like my worse half, (gooner) he's like that about football!! Lucky socks, must wear shirt, do not shave e.t.c. I just agree and crap myself if 'said' lucky socks are not washed.

As for the 3 drains 'thing', I asked the powers that be, namely my nan, (the one whos drilled it into me) and her words were, i quote, 'It's unlucky, innit' Nan's who'd have em!!

Right all my life I have been totally agaisnt supersitions and totally ignore all of them! I think they're such a waste of time. But I have started to wonder, I'm VERY accident prone and clumsy so this might be why!

To be honest, Lizzieslayer, you don't know how lucky you are, i wish I could ignore them, but then I just can't bring myself to do it, it's like a compulsion, if I try to ignore a magpie or similar, i spend the rest of the day wondering what's going to happen to me the next day..... Obsessive!!

I'm amazed at how many people here are so superstitious; I'll generally walk under ladders if it's quicker than walking around (unless it's obviously hazardous), if I don't shave it's only because I can't be bothered, and if I see a magpie the very most I'll do is think "oh look, a magpie".

Do you genuinely believe that you have so little control over your life that a black cat crossing your path can change your "fate", or that stepping on cracks in the pavement will directly lead to "bad luck"? Or is it just habit/affectation?

Of course, I'll tear up bits of paper an throw them over my shoulder to keep the elephants away - but that's not superstition 'cos it works

Define hazardous?? Any guy up a ladder has some pot of something whether it be paint or water, therefore ALL ladders are hazardous, surely!!

Now i'm curious, a black cat crossing your path... is that considered lucky or unlucky??.. because in my part of the world (NE) it's considered lucky..
