Consoles
I'm thinking of buying a new games console, but I'm not sure which one to get, PlayStation 2, GameCube or an X-Box.
What have other people got? Any recommendations? I used to have a PlayStation and my favourite games were Tekken 3 and Metal Gear Solid.
Also, for those of you with a PlayStation 2, what's it like as a DVD player?

We have a Super SNES, Nintendo 64 and Playstation. I'll be getting the boys a Game Cube for Christmas (unless I give in to them and get one at the end of the month 
)

PS2, Try ssx, ssx Tricky, & crazy taxi, good games, and good old Lara's due out this sep/nov. Keeps many a winters night occupied. Can't speak for the others as i'm a Playstation fan, and no matter what the recommendations are, (not that I've had any, everyone I know has PS) I wouln't swap! Does that help

i have a ps2 which i'm very happy with but dunno if the gamecube or x box is better as they are supposed to be, but i'm happy with the ps2.

I got my PS2 for £100 sold my DVD player for £30 and my plasystation for £25..so i only really spent £45 for it
Have GT3 which looks amazing. Borrowed and finished MGS2 in 3 days and am waiting to get hold of Final Fantasy X and GTA3 which I'ev been playing on the PC up till now.
If you've not already got a DVD player then buy a PS2..if you have got one and it aint that great sell it and use the money to buy a PS2

One big advantage of the PS2 (which I would advocate) over the others is the simple fact that it's been out for longer - there are more games out for it, and the newer games take better advantage of it's features than do new games for the xbox or gamecube, even if the younger consoles are technically superior.
Plus psx games will work on it - great source of cheap and not-bad games, plus it means that if you already have a psx the games from it can still be used.
Lastly market forces - the playstation is by far the dominant console, I doubt the gamecube will make much headway against it, and microsoft are losing money hand-over-fist with the xbox (even more so than the other console manufacturers they're treating it as a loss-leader), so even if the PS2 technology is a year older than the other two - a year from now it will probably still be at the head of the pack, and if a game is only going to be brought out on a single console, it will be on the PS2.
Post-lastly (gotta start thinking out what I'm going to write before I start typing) the xbox has a hard disk, which is both great and disasterous - fantastic for the versatility it offers, but also clearly the fatal flaw in the physical survivability of the xbox - it adds to the weight and will be relatively fragile, expect a year from now for most xbox HW faults to be with it's HD.

A chap at a games publisher I once interviewed said the ultimate game console would always be a £2000 PC.
I've been toying with the idea of getting a console too myself. Fundamentally, I don't think there's a real worry about any of the three disappearing any time soon - they all have too much cash (unlike Sega) and ambition to give up.
There's also no real doubt that, power-wise, the Xbox comes out on top, followed by the Gamecube.
However, the real issue is the games available. PS2 has a much larger base of titles, especially once the PSX titles are included. However, it strikes me that, given how long it's been out, there's not as many real killer titles for it as you might expect. A number of developers have also comemnted that the PS2's complex architecture makes getting the most out of it harder than with an Xbox or GCN.
I think what it boils down to is what games you most want to play which are exclusive to one console or another. For me, it was Metal Gear Solid 2 and Grand Theft Auto 3 on PS2, Halo and Buffy on Xbox. I wasn't especially grabbed by anything on GCN.
In the end, I decided to get a new top of the range GeForce 4 video card for my PC instead (scary thought - the card would have paid for a console and at least 2 games!) as GTA3 was out for the PC and MGS2 and Halo are in the pipeline and my favourite games genres are PC strengths (First person shooters and wargames). However, there are some game genres that just never seem to have worked on the PC - I'd love a decent beat-em-up like Tekken for my PC but I've not seen one yet.

I would go for the PS2 personally, I know far more about it than the other consoles. And as said above, there are plenty more games out for it. There's only really so much Mario/Luigi games that a person can handle...

I'm still struggling to decide which console to buy.
I test drived my mates X-Box, and Halo was indeed a brilliant game (especially with Dolby 5.1 surround), but not sure if it's worth the extra 100 quid, plus the press has been a bit negative towards it.
PS2 Grand Theft Auto was the best game I'd played in a long time, and it still the main selling point of the PS2 for me.
After playing to Goldeneye to death on the N64, I was gonna continue my support of Nintento and plump with the gamecube, but the Starwars game is the only decent title out at the moment.
I haven't played Agent Under Fire, but from what I understand, it's worse that Goldeneye on the N64.
I don't really understand why, as these are supposed to be 'next generation' consoles.
So in summary, I still dunno what I'm gonna get.

just remember square have come back to develop for nintendo so there will be new square games on the system..mm new ff too apperently!!

It is, but the PC version is better yet - higher resolutions and shooting people is much easier and intuitive with a mouse.

Probably comes down to the guys at Rare being much better gameplay designers than the ones at EA Canada.

I am now resolved to stick to the PC as my prefered games playing platform. However, if I were to get one right now, I think I'd go for the Xbox.

My brother first bought the PS2 when they came out and seemed to have a lag on the dvds he used as in the lipsynch wasn't quite right. Then MI2 came out saying it was PS2 compatible (which seemed strange as you would think there isn't any difference between dvds!

Having been living in halls for the last year, I've had intimate access to all three of the consoles & overall its a toss-up between the PS2 & the GameCube. The reason I leave the X-Box out is for several reasons (poor games, horrible design, expensive peripherals) but one overidding factor - the controller. They've taken the dreamcast controller, and made it worse. For one, its just too big & the button layout is not inducive to comfortable game playing, go into a high street shop & see for yourself. And so to the real competition...
The obvious difference is the DVD playback capabilities of the PS2 - if thats important important to you, its obviously the console to go for. After that, you can look at technical prowess, where the GameCube easily wins, but that (to me at least) has never been the be-all and end-all. For that, you must turn to games.
The PS2 has a huge wealth of games available, wherin you'll find something for everyone. However, due to the PS2's age don't expect too many more titles to come out. The GameCube, being very new, has much fewer titles, but more & more will hit the light of day, especially in the build up to christmas. If you ignore the multi-format games (Tony Hawk's, SSX Tricky, Crazy Taxi etc...) in my opinion the GameCube has the "better" games, but my taste isn't everyone's taste. IIRC Sony's hexplanation was that because DVD is a relatively new format the mastering on some discs isn't quite 'settled' yet, and as the format matures this would improve. Or something. Anyway, I bought the Sony remote for it which came with a CD that had an updated version of the DVD playback software that was supposed to help. And it has

- I rarely have problems with lipsync now.
