What did I spot in the news....
The teenager accused of murdering an elderly widow in north Wales was a vampire-obsessed youth who drank the blood of his victim

"The killer was not mentally unstable" is a phrase that causes all sorts of problems. Much like declaring that a defendant is not insane, it gets bandied about in the press a lot,and used to support all sorts of bogus conclusions. The usual one is that, as he wasn't nuts, it was the books what made him do this.
Legal insanity however is a non-clinical term, and refers solely to the defendant's understanding of right and wrong, and the nature of the actions they perform. You don't have to suffer any diagnosed mental illness to be not guilty by reason of insanity, and you won't be not guilty by reason of insanity just because you suffer from a diagnosed mental illness.
It's a while since I read law, but I'm pretty sure that to be not guilty by reason of insanity you have to not only not understand that what you were doing was wrong, but also not really understand the nature of the act committed.
This sort of legal term tends to get ported by way of clinical psychology - and the clinical definitions aren't much more helpful than the legal, particularly given the somewhat speculative nature of the discipline - to a coloquial meaning without regard for context.
As for how cult stuff affects my life? I sometimes find myself slipping into a fairly Sunnydale way of speaking, but that's about it I think.
Oh, and my website is filled with over-thought-out ramblings on the series.

Lioness- I had the game and everything, it came out after the t.v series and was the most confusing game ive EVER played
On a more series note I remember people saying that the boys who killed James Bulger were affected by watching films like childsplay, apart from what were they doing watching them at that age, I disagree IMHO there has to be something not quite right in the first place and you cant be affected that easily because we`d be in a world full of murderers, in the words of Stu from Scream "Movies dont create psychos ,movies make psychos more creative"
So I cant believe that this 17 year old boy had any real grasp of right or wrong to start with. It really gets to me when people try and blame books and films, I just think well you commited the crime so you should pay for it, dont make excuses you drank the blood of an old woman, there IS no excuse!!!!

I totally agree with everything already said, I don't believe that the boys were mentally stable, it always annoys me how the media try to assert the blame on something else such as television and movies, etc while avoiding the real problem which I think is mental instability.
It always seems the media has it in for cult and sci-fi interests and is always trying to show they are a bad influence on society etc..
I don't really think cult tv has affected me much although most people immediately judge me when I tell them I am a big Buffy and Angel fan, like there is a stigma attached to it, they clearly have never watched it!
It has also made me interested in wicca and made me think a lot more about religion in general,
Also Spike if you get through to Narnia, can I come? I've always been dying to go there

Prophet, it is my understanding that it was not only claimed that the defendent was not 'legally insane' at the time of the attack, but had no mental condition the court should consider - this from a clinical psychologist, I believe?
And to those of you who keep insisting the lad was mentally unstable, can I just ask why you assume this?

From a legal prespective, insanity is not knowing the difference between right and wrong at the time of the crime. this chap quite possibly did know the difference but his delisions (is that the word?) meant he ignored them or felt he was above the law.
The human mind is a wonderful thing and will do almost anything to protect itself. I've seen many cases of normal people who believe something completly mental. One good example is a woman who believed one of her hands was the hand of her dead husband.
IMO, Something is missing in these peoples lives and these delusions are a defence mechanism. with the woman above, why would you have to worry about being lonley if you have your dead husbands hand to worry about?
Thats my take on this chap, he is part of reality in that he understands the rights and wrong in life but something caused him to believe he was a vampire to protect himself, in some way, from the realities of his life.
(there could also be chemical imbalances contributing but i wont go into that, it'd take too long)
As for the original question, can sci fi affect us. yes it can, in many ways. some are definatly affected by TV like the way it can affect our speach. (i'd never heard of wiggins before watching Buffy, or scanky but i've since used both in conversation. and chandlers (friends) "could that BE any ..." i often copy this speach pattern).
Other things, it's debatable as to weather the show affects us or we are drawn to the show because of how we already are, such as - our thoughts, our ideas, the people we like to hang a round with.
It is also possible that a show can turn someone inot a killer (hear me out please). if exposed from an early age to violence it can cause violent children. However, there would also have to be am almost total lack of family enviroment to teach right and wrong to said child, and enfore the right and wrong believes.

Not *that* different though, surely... I mean, in what significant way do the terms differ for this particular instance? Is it really egoistic, to say nothing of *purely* egoistic, to think that cutting people's hearts out is questionable (to put it mildly) behaviour in North Wales?

Put simply:
Egotism: An exaggerated belief in your own self worth.
Egoism: A state of mind where variance from yourself is seen as alien. A total preoccupation with the self.
To believe that the killer in question was mentally unstable is hardly egotistic. It takes no inflated opinion of yourself to think this.
To believe that the killer in question was mentally unstable is egoistic, as it is based on the assumption that significant moral deviation from yourself must be a mental inbalance, rather than a difference in opinion.

Very helpful, but I still don't see why I have to have a 'preoccupation' with myself to think that such a grisly murder betokes a serious aberration, socially, if not mentally (I did, I believe, also question what kind of a society could produce such a person). I feel that many peopel on these boards would agree.
Still, that's all I have to say on the matter, as I don't want to be drawn into a debate that neither side can win.

When people say they don't want to be drawn into a debate that neither side can win, I always find myself scratching my head. Especially if I haven't said I'm immovable...
Anyway, for what it's worth, I never said that to consider the killer a social aberration was egoistic. I quite clearly only referred to the idea that the killer HAD to be mentally unstable on the grounds that he was morally deviant. Not quite sure how you can confuse social aberration with mental instability.
May I suggest that in future you read and take in the entirety of someone's post before trying to deconstruct them? And that you don't assume that because you are immovable on a subject that everyone else is as well - that would be another example of egoism. Just my less than humble one.
