Most universities now seem to provide internet access via a network card onto Super JANET (The University network across the county) into the flats/bedrooms so i'd check to see if your uni provided said service.

They will all allow a phone into the flat if not separately into your study/bedroom so that shouldn't be a problem.

NFI - My uni didn't allow it. spend all hours holed up in the 24 hour access suite in the library

It's all changed since I was a student - then you were lucky if there was a payphone at the end of the corridor I believe that a lot of places now have access to the university's own network in halls of residence and this will be connected to the internet. If you can have a phone you might also be able to get dialup access.

My sister had this in her room at Durham. It cost her £50 for the ethernet card and £35 a year for access (or it might have been the other way round).

One thing about university networks though is hat they tend to limit what you can access. You may not be able to connect to irc or several of the IMs

I don't believe any of York's halls have direct access to the university's network or to JANET from student bedrooms, only from designated computer rooms; however, as a student you're eligible to use JANET's dialup service which though not ideal (and not free last time I checked) may be suitable depending on circumatances.

Well my halls (Northumbria) will have internet connection, a lot of it depends upon the age of the halls building and University Policy. Royal Holloway for example was trying to avoid the issue of internet connection in each room after the payments for internet access was changed from a set block (single) fee charged to each university to a usage fee (amount of sites visited). Loughborough has all halls with internet connection

In Southamton we had a phone in our hall flat when I was in a more modern hall (first year in a 60's building second in a 90's building) fortunatly I was in a flat with a couple of computer scientists who used an old pc as a server (so cables were hidden across the flat connecting up the rooms dialed into the university server as a free local call (before phone companies started charging for connecting to mobiles, and cables were even were sometimes thrown out to other hall flats in the opposite building for network gaming.

I think Southampton has internet connection in all halls built post 1995, but not before.

Don't know the situation in York, sorry.

And the internet is an essential research tool

Well, I've emailed York about it, so I should have some sort of answer withinn the next few days with a bit of luck !!

I don't think my parents are too keen on my getting it really; I think that they are convinced that I'm not going to go out and socialise cos I'd be on the net too much...

I s'pose they have a point....
