You raise the money through sponsership. The parachute school take their money for the jump and then all left over money you raise goes to the charity we jump for
by misskittyfantastic
I knew there had to be a snag somewhere...
Who's up for it?
As you may or may not know, a group of us did a charity parachute jump about a year ago and I'm considering organising another one if I get enough interest.
It was great fun and we raised around £4,500 for Breakthrough Breast Cancer. There are pictures here.
I just thought Id test the water on this as right now I don't have an idea for dates or anything apart from the fact that it will be a weekend, in Nottingham in the Summer.
Anyone interested?

Wow thanks for all the responses you guys
For people who are nervous - People who went last year know I was totally petrified. I was "I'm doing it.. I'm not doing it...I'm doing it... I'm not doing it" right up until the last minute!
I am not crazy about heights and was sure I'd scream the whole way down! I don't do rollercoasters or anything like that. However I was completely wrong! The rush was fantastic, the freefall was the most exhilarating feeling I've *ever* had and the instructors did *everything* to reassure me that even if they were to pass out the chute would still open automatically and everything would be fine.
My Mum came with us too and believe me, if she can do it - anyone can!
Stoo - cheers for providing technical info as per usual!
Teresa is totally correct. Since this will be a fundraising event, all you do is get a many people to sponsor you as possible. This is the way MOST charities work however until things are more definite this many change:
If you raise more than the cost, you can if you like use your sponsor money to pay for it and the surplus goes to the charity.
If you don't raise enough to cover the cost, you split what you did raise 50/50 and use half to go towards the cost (the rest you will need to provide) and the other half to go towards the charity.
Ming (and anyone else interested) We chose to do tandem jumps last time, but you can if you like do a static line jump. If anyone wants do this rather than a tandem jump I'll need to know for certain a while in advance because it will affect the time/day we will need to book in for,
Also if you have any friends, family, work colleagues, casual acquaintances, one night stands or people you can drag off the street who want to join in then please let me know!
*** You DONT have to be a member of T21 to take part. The more people we can get, the more money we can raise. ***
EVERYONE else is welcome to come along for the moral support. God knows some of us will need it!

Mememememe! I'd like to do this. God yes!
Good luck, dudes! I know someone who did a parachute jump, landed quite badly, was in considerable pain and had to be off work for weeks. This has totally put me off something that I was never 100% keen on doing anyway, so hats off to all you brave chaps and chapesses. I hope you raise lots of cash and have a great day (with no injuries).

I won't jump, but will come along cheer those that do, donate a bit of dough, and get really drunk as per usual
i might come along to watch, but with being in hospital earlier this year and still not cleared up yet it'd have to be a no-no. And last time it was over 16 so i don't qualify
But i'll talk to the parents and ask if we can come along for moral support

Was that a static line jump with round chutes (that was what the place I jumped at used)? With these, procedure is that you fall and roll over on landing and I did once land fairly hard and painfully. Unfortuantely, this was about halfway through a Bank Holiday session so my remaining jumps were a tad painful too!

However, I did notice BPS appears to be using square ones which, ISTR, means a much lower landing speed, something to do with flaring the 'chute as you touch down, I think, which seemed to mean a much gentler landing.

I get to jump an instructor?! YES! I'm a definate now
by Stoo
You're strapped to an instructor, so when he jumps, you jump
Isn't that the same thing?

Lori - The way a tandem jump works you dont actually out your feet down until the instructor behind you has landed. So its pretty safe
And for the record Jumpers must be 16 or over.

I would like to register my interest in doing static line instead of tandem, but only if it doesn't cause too much bother (otherwise tandem is fine)
I will be planning to pay the jump cost out of my own pocket, that way any money I do raise is all for the charity. I dunno why, but i just feel easier doing it that way.
My brother will also be interested (who isn't a member of T21.

No worries, that's what I did last year

Doesn't doing static line mean no nice long freefall? If so then I'd rather stick with tandem.
Yep. You're supposed to count to 4 then check your 'chute's deployed correctly but I don't ever recall getting much past 2 and a bit before feeling drag as the 'chute deploys. I can still remember that overwhelmings sense of relief during my first jump!
Static probably only makes sense if you're even halfway serious about progressing to freefall. If it's going to be a one-off sort of thing, tandem will provide the bigger rush - higher deployment altitude plus the freefall part.

Well, since the other half has already volunteered, I guess I'd better do too if I know what's good for me.
But went to watch last time, and it did look like great fun, so yeah, I'll do it.

*glances down* Ah yes, i do appear to be wearing the trousers in this relationship I don't think i ever actually insisted on you jumping too, though i may have strongly suggested it... which is of course entirely different

Seeing as you are most entertained by my fear of spiders, Dan, my reactions in the plane should be very funny stuff indeed
Looking at those photos brought back some memories....
I would love to do another jump, it would just depend when it is as I am on a gap year untill July, but if it was after that, I would be well up for it

Wow. I missed out on this last year completely. Well, there was the small sticking point that I only knew enough people to raise about £3.78 - maybe not quite enough, really.
But now, well, this year is all different, so yup, I'll register myself as a "yes" I'd love to jump. Hey, we can set up an auxiliary lottery to find out who gets to push me too. That'll probably pay for half my ticket anyway
Seriously, yes, I'd like to give this a go. Always wanted to. "I can flyyyyyyyy!"
