disaster
n.

taken direct from the dictionary. i believe 9/11 qualifies for the description of both words.

I'm just wondering how someone can be so cold and heartless? People on here may have lost relatives or friends.

'Atrocity' fits the bill far better than 'disaster', especially on this occasion. Aperson isn't allowed to say that?

So 3025 families missing loved ones isnt a desaster? not to mention countless friends?

all i can say is i'd hate to see your definatio of desaster occur. what has to happne? half the polulation of a country wiped out?

and a person is allowed to say what ever thsy choose. they might however be labled rude and insensitivem especially if they dont use tact and diplomacy (as Lori mentioned)

Perhaps wht Jango meant is that this incident is too bad to be considered a disaster, losing billions of pounds is a disaster, floods destroying homes is a disaster. I think that calling the deaths of 2300 - 3100 people a disaster doesn't show the respect that is deserved.

On the subject of respect, Jango, I appreciate what your saying but... well, I'm sure you gotten the point by now.
