Terrified about University...
Ok, so I'm probably feeling the same as the majority of students who are going to uni soon or have just started. I was sitting at hom the other night, and I suddenly had this massive panic about uni and I realised how scared I was.
I have never been the most talkative of people and have been known to have problems with self esteem and I have been having visions of myself being the sad muppett that sits in their room all day! It doesn't help that my dad seems to think that that is exactly what I'm going to be like. I'm also absolutely useless at anything domesticated and have no sense of direction. How the hell am I going to be able to find everything and do everything that I am supposed to?? I am going to be the worst student ever
I'm missing my mate already who went to uni this weekend. I'm terrified that she is going to forget about me. Shes the best friend that I have ever had
/me is beginning to think I am sounding silly now
Anyone got any advice before I panic even more ??

York rocks, i've been there for a couple of parties at a friends house who was at Uni there. Her housemate was called Kendra
I never went to Uni, escaped the whole A-Level thing and did a National Diploma. I've always suspected A-Levels are like School-Plus, you don't seem to break away from old school mates and their perceptions of you if half the people from your school do A-Levels at the same college. I was the only person from my school doing my course and so when I met new friends I had no problem being the person I wanted to be. Soon became a hippy with long hair
My advice is get drunk lots and dont do any studying. Ten years down the line when you're getting old you'll remember the best years of your life with a smile as you clean the streets
What!?? Worked for me!

Ooh err depends on how you were suggesting she should "loosen up" {snigger}
There'll be lots of socialising too - just remember that while a little alcohol is a wonderful way to loosen up, a lot is a *really* bad idea when you're with people you barely know!
LOL !!!!

I start this coming weekend and i'm really nervous!! last week i was in tears and insisting that i didn't want to go at all. i'm still not sure and kinda feel that i'd be wasting three years. luckily i'm going to Lancaster which is only about 40 mins away from home down the motorway.
I'm sure that once you get there though, that you'll soon settle in. it's just getting used to the idea of looking after yourself.
I'm really gonna miss my best though. He's been a real help to me these past couple of months and i don't know what i'll do without him. probably run up a massive phone bill calling him everyday. hehe. oh well, maybe he'll phone me. put it on his mum's bill. lol.
it's definitely a big change but everyone seems to say that once you get there it's great so, yeah, you'll have a great time.

Bryany, when I noticed she was going to York I did immediately think of you, but felt safer volunteering my brother's help than yours. Besides, I knew you'd see the thread sooner or later. So come on then, where do you recommend in York?
Head2Head, I'll still email my brother for some places, and I'll ask him about the bakery. It's more of a really cool cafe type place, but they do the most amazing pasties, and these meat ball things and...
Y'know, I suddenly have an overwelming desire to visit York...

Replace 'first lesson' with 'first full day', 'a guy' with 'fresher's pub crawl', and 4 in the afternoon with 'into the early hours of the morning' and that was me yesterday
And I vote H2H organises a York meet when she's settled in. We can go to York Dungeons and then do the Micklegate (Sp!) run and then crash some uni parties
Ummmm......we could do Not sure if people would want to come though...only the select few on here have actually met me !

Oooh, one more thing: don't be afraid to ask someone there name on two or three separate occasions. You've got a lot of new names and faces to learn and so do they. Asked suitably apologetically, they'll probably be glad for the oppotunity to ask yours again if they've forgotten it
When was the last time you were in York Sydney?

and then do the Micklegate (Sp!) run
Un/fortunately (depending on what view you had of the Micklegate run) the council have made a huge effort to run this down ...... and succeeded.
As for where you should go - well i won't bore you all with the details. I've promised head2head an email
(Note to self: must remember to write and send that email)
About three years ago (when i actually did the run!!!) have been since, but to a mates house party rather than doing the pubs.

OOOh and I thought of something else that you *really* shouldn't do when you start Uni... Don't snog one of your lecturers the day before you start their course
Something you want to share with us Syd???

Things not to do at the start of your second year: mistake your college son for a college daughter when handwriting leads you to read Alexander as Alexandra
I just shudder to think of you having to cope with that level of responsibility.

OK, here's what my brother has to say:
'Errmmm, it's been a while. A mate of mine says that York has changed alot since I've been away. The main thing to remember is that the campus is <family edit - he meant to say, not very good...> - no decent nightlife and few amenities. If your friend is a die hard clubber then they should look into how they can get to and back from Leeds. Yorks Nightclubs are all Mainstream meatmarket types, there is however a wide variety of pubs and seedy Jazz/blues clubs.
My favourite little bakery (called Mowbray's) is right in the middle of town - at No 10, Stonegate (One of the cobbled pedestrian streets). That area is also where the best pubs are, not too far away from the river. Mowbrays
also do great home made ice-creams.
I'll ask my mate Stuart which bars are best to go to the next time I talk to him and let you know.'
And as Sydney said, if you organize a York meet (maybe Bryany could help? ) then I'm sure loads of people would love to come up. However, you may want to wait till next year. You might surprise yourself and find that your social calendar is a little full for the first term.
And as for you, Misskittyfantastic, what could you be suggesting?
