Themed chat nights. Everyone please read (and post)
Hi guys, we’re thinking of running some themed chat nights, specifically to do with either TV shows, comics, books, or films and we would like YOUR input as to what we should theme the first one around. Hopefully we can get all the folks who are into the same thing into the chatroom at the same time for a great, meaty discussion. We promise to give you plenty of warning this time 
Maybe you want to talk about the upcoming series of Buffy, or Angel, or maybe you can’t wait till 2005 and Star Wars episode 3, or maybe the new X-men film is the thing you're waiting for. Whatever your favourite on-topic topic is, post it up here for all to see. We’ll narrow it down to a few and make a decision on the next one to go ahead.

OK so I take it that's one vote for Monty Python 
We're not trying to railroad folks into only discussing ONE thing in the main room, we're just trying to facilitate fans of the same show/film/book getting together in a chat room, specifically for that topic, at the same time.
Kinda like trivia, but with no points for answering the questions

Okay how about one of the following...
Music - Does the top 40 actually represent what most people listen to or is it just a set-up by the record companies??
Star Wars - What do you think will happen in Episode 3??
Angel or Buffy - Where do we go from here..the future of either series.
Or why not try for one of the more serious topics from the general chat board like the International Baccaleaurte(sp) thread or the now defunt thread on the Middle East situation.
I'll try and think of some more ideas later.

OK, I'd like to put in another vote for Monty Python. So that us Grailites can line up against those scummy Brianists and boil their bottoms .... wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiith ...... A HERRING!!!!

Well religion and politics are always emotive subjects, possibly a way to loose some friends tho
I suggest a Battle of the Sexes and devide that into catagories, like who's better at sports, doing 2 things at once, driving, etc etc.

As you say Politics is a great one to get stuff really going, in which case i'd be up for a discussion about the situation in the middle east, or if not, Battle of the Sexes...

I'd be up for Monty Python! Wouldn't it just turn into a quotefest though? (Not that I mind, I have spent many hours in the pub reciting Monty Python lines!)
What about a book club type thing? Someone nominates a book well in advance and people go off and read it, then meet up in chat to talk about it?

I think light topics work best in live chat, as they're often more open, faster flowing, and easier for people to join in.
'Serious' themed chats (eg politics, current affairs etc) are often rather tricky as positions are quite complex, take a while to explain effectively, and supporting evidence (eg references) is often of critical importantance; likewise the more serious the discussion the more limited the audience -- the complexity level of the discussion will mean either that it goes over the heads of most people, or that it gets 'dumbed down' to be accessible to most people and so the people who are best informed on the topic (and who are possibly also the most interested in the topic) are less able to get involved as they can't bring their heaviest guns to bear; so you either end up with only a tiny group, or with a fairly limited discussion, neither of which is necessarily bad but each misses a significant amount of the benefit such a forum can offer.
Serious discussions are possibly best suited to debate in the normal forums, where people are better able to expound their positions; perhaps we should have a 'serious' forum under 'general chat' so that discussions in 'general chat' are fairly social, friendly and non-contentious and the 'serious' forum can be used for such things as debating the various evils of socialism
