Alcohol
recently i've been thinking, the weekly limit of units for a bloke is 21 and bird 14 right? But i'm way over, i mean i'd say on avergae it have a 30 odd units per week, sometimes i may only have 10 if that then other times 50 odd depending how many ngihts i go out in the week. but on average i'm way over, ok its ok now but what about in the future this could do some pretty bad damage to my body. Just to reassure me a bit, are all yuo guys over the limit too?

eek! you lot who drink alot are real stupid!! i hate drinking and anything associated with it...REASON! simple...i had a husband who knocked me around, knocked my confidence for six, hated me going out with my mates, threw the dinner i cooked for him in the bin cos it wasnt ready when he staggered in from the pub and also was never a father to my kids and spent an obscene amount of money in the pub!. we all lived in fear of him. He has been drinking for 20 years and his eyes are now yellow and he has red veins all over his face and he looks bloody ill.
so my advise is DONT DO IT!

Granted I'll go out and I'll have a bit to drink. I can honestly say that I would never be violent towards a female, I know through and through that this is just plain wrong (Men are a different story . If I'm quite drunk I tend to get emotional rather than anything else.

The keyword is "moderation". The only person who knows where their sensible limit is (unless they have a serious problem) is the person drinking. I like to get drunk at Cons, Nos, nights out etc, but I rarely drink at home, so I guess I'm a social drinker.
I never get hungover (provided I stay clear of red wine), so I'm as bad as the next guy (who I could probably drink under the table) for having one too many, but I'm a funny drunk and it helps me shed inhibitions... and occasionally my clothes too 
Alcohol does not make people violent. People make themselves violent and blame it on drink the next day. I speak from experience (drunk abusive boyfriend) and have to say that to call everyone who drinks "stupid" is a foolish statement and personally I can't help but take a little offence whether it was intended or not. Just because one person in your life abused alcohol is no reason to assume that anyone who cuts loose and gets a little out of it on special occasions ("Yay the day ends in 'y'!!" is a fool.

Posted: 23:09 Oct 22 2002 Your ex husband had a problem before he drunk the violence is already there the drink was just an excuse for it. To blame it on drink is to absolve him of any responsibilty for it.

I drink and may get really silly have never hurt or tried to hurt anybody or anything, And whilst I am only harming myself I shall carry on.

I usually become quiet and sleepy, sometimes I can burst into tears when drunk or think about bad stuff from way back. I can also become vulernable and needy if I have gone to far on drink. I can't remember getting violent I remember getting angry years ago when drunk a couple of times, but that did not lead to lashing out at others male or female like a couple of peoples experience of drunken people, but lashing out at myself.

Angel1, I'm really sorry to hear your story. That's a terrible thing for you to have had to go through.
However, I agree with the people who feel slightly offended at being told that we are stupid for liking a drink sometimes. I don't think alcohol *makes* people violent any more than it makes them sad, or happy, or anything else. I'd say it enhances emotions rather than creating them. If I have a drink when I'm feeling low, it makes me cry. If have a drink when I'm feeling angry, I can get quite aggressive - something I try very hard to avoid these days.
What I'm trying to say is, people who become violent after drinking are already liable to become violent, the drink just releases their inhibitions. And to blame the subsequent outburst on drink is just a way of avoiding facing up to the fact that they have a personality disorder.
Don't get me wrong. I don't think drink is always a good thing. My husband ran a pub for three years and I've seen all sorts. Drunken football fans throwing stuff when they were told they couldn't have another drink, old blokes trying it on with young women, one guy on his early twenties who became so dependent he couldn't hold down a job any more, people falling out over stupid things...But the majority of people, never forget, have a few drinks, a good time, and go home while they can still walk in a straight line. And I've never seen anyone change when they're drunk. Most people become much more intense, but the basic personality remains the same.
