This sounds like a great idea Spike....I'm trying to think of a way we could do this....how about really big batteries??
cordless vacuum cleaner
ok, so you're hoovering the house and suddenly you can't pull the vacuum anymore as the cords run outta length, you then have to unplug and re plug somewhere else, also you need to avoid tripping over the wire and kocknig stuff over with it, whats the solution i hear you cry? a cordless vacuum cleaner! if i send off this idea to the dyson company and eithe rlease it out or sell it for loads i could get paid millinos, it could change the world and make it a better place. but how can it be done you ask? know they need a fair amount of power so maybe it coudl somehow be charged up but it may run out, or maybe little remote sensors could be palced around the house to powr other things as well such as hairdryers. do you think i'm onto a winner?

There is already a system available that kinda eliminates this problem, but it's different to your idea. You get a vacuum cleaner fitted to your house (central dust collection and suction unit with pipes to each room), and then connect a hose like you get on a cylinder cleaner to a socket in each room as you go round. More difficult to explain than I thought... hmm... have a look here and you'll see what I mean --> www.eurovac.co.nz/
The problem with this is, it's expensive to install. So if you came up with a rechargable hoover, you'd be quids in. Mind you, those hand held ones are rechargeable so perhaps someone else has already patented the idea. Good luck!

When I went to see my (now ex) in-laws in Australia they had one of these.
Didn't really know what it was for until it was fired-up for the first time. The dust collector was in the garage and so was I at the time
I didn't jump, much...

A couple of companies already have them in a few guises:
1) The dustbuster - Hand-held rechargable
2) Electrolux (I think) Not only rechargable, but autonomous robotic hoover (kinda expensive though..)
The main reason why there isn't a common rechargable vacuum claner is simply the fact that the power drain from the electric motors would flatten the batteries too quickly.
Something like a Dyson uses well over a kilowatt when in use, the size of the batteries needed to make it feasable would make the thing so heavy that you'd not be able to move it, if not you'd have power for about 60 seconds of use. Not really very handy.
I'm sure that all the manufacturers are all well aware of how useful a cordless vacuum cleaner would be, but it is likely that they are waiting for battery technology to advance to a point to where the designs they almost certainly have, become feasible.
