Not a current student, but yeah, I remember that leaving things till the night before and then overdosing on Redbull and Pro-Plus and a mad panic to get the work done. Then again, I dropped out of Uni twice. Never got a degree, but lots of debt. I think I make a pretty good cautionary tale on this one.
Basically, it's up to you and how badly you want your degree. Yes, Uni is a fantastic time for socialising, for meeting new people and finding things out about yourself and what you are capable of. And I encourage anyone at Uni to do just that. But it's also hard work and poverty. And if you want to really take full advantage of this time, then you have to cope with those aspects too.
If you tell yourself that you'll never learn, then guess what? You won't. Alternatively, you can decide that you will make the change, and just get on with doing it. Do the assignment as soon as you get it, and then kick back.
As a wise philosopher once said: 'Do or do not, there is no try.'
