My 2 pence worth
Yes, I think they deserve more pay, but not at the level they are asking as other goverment workers (as such) will jump on the bandwagon and before long the breaks will fail. Despite what the government tells us, things are not that good economically.
I agree it can be a crap job at times, but if you can't deal with that, get another job.
Also, they can do other jobs during their time off to suppliment income.
I know that if they get caught unlucky it can mean death, as the job is no longer just putting out fires, but fire and rescue.
Strike action is not the best method for public safety, and I know the negotiating table hasn't worked, and no, I don't know of a better way to deal with it , but the 8 day strike is going to cause major problems as other people hell bent on causing disruption jump on the aforementioned bandwagon, who need a couple of days off to finish decorating the lounge etc.
I don't want to join a flame war (sorry!!) but this is just my opinion and all I'll post on the subject.
