Medical schools go through a lot of bodies in training student doctors, I believe they're the group that uses the most cadavers. What your body can be used for depends quite a bit on how you died, and the state your corpse is in, but in general even if you've had a lot of surgery in life, and donated organs in death, there will be a need for the body somewhere in research. In particular teaching forensic pathology often requires "interestingly dead" people.
Body donation?
After watching an excellent documentary about a place in the usa that uses real bodies to learn the way bodies decay, for forensic science in order to help police catch criminals. they leave bodies to decay recording tempertures, rate of decay, weather and if a bodies clothed or not. this tells them when a person might have been killed. Many people donate their bodies to science and this program focused on a man who had done just that and what they learnt from studying his body. his relatives said how much he wanted to help people and for others to learn more about their bodies. In death he did as much as he could as in life, and that made me smile, even tho i was a little saddened at his death.
then of course theres Body worlds where people have donated their bodies for examination by medical and public alike.
evidence has shown that over 15% of people who've been have stopped smoking after witnessing what it does to the body.
i think i might donate myself, i believe the spirit and soul go on to pastures new and the body is empty of what was a person so if i can help science discover something new then in a way its a form of immortality.
would you consider body donation?

I'd definitely consider body donation. Never thought about it until I went to the Body Worlds exhibition, which was fascinating.
Do you know that the goverment have been trying to ban Body Worlds since it arrived in the uk? yet its been proved that Body Worlds is educational and helps prevent people misusing their bodies. In Korea, where there is another exibition it is endorsed by the goverment as a tool for learning and understanding ourselves, yet our goverment thinks we're not ready for that level of education.
See the exibition before the 3rd of Febuary next year, cos that when its leaving for good, it will never come back to this country in the forseeable future. A real shame

I read about this in the newspaper when the exhibition first arrived and thought the government stupid for their views, I reckon those 15% who gave up smoking are better off (trying to give up smoking now but am not denying anybody else's need) and if it's teaches you or encourages you to look after yourself better I dont see any wrong in it. The government allows us to watch films that could be more scarring then this exhibition and events we have been involved with can do more damage. If I'm down before the 3rd I will most certainly be checking this out.
Fancy making a day trip of it Nem?

I'd donate all my organs (tho they might give my liver back )
they're welcome to everything from corneas to heart to skin (whick can be used for skin grafts and other burn treatments)
the rest i want cremated. it's not that i dont want to help science, i just dont want to be poked and prodded. thats why i dont want to be burried. the idea of someone digging me up and studying my remains or putting me in a museum is just Egh!

It's at the Atlantic Gallery on Brick Lane. Dead easy to get to via tube and a really nice area to wander round, with great cafes to grab a coffee and discuss what you've just seen. It cost me £10 to get in and was well worth it. See the website for more details, directions etc.

Whoever wants my body can have it. I thoroughly believe that when we die, we die, we stop living, we stop existing in anything but the living's memory. No soul, no reincarnation, no afterlife. Just a corpse.
So if any of you wany my corpse, let me know now

I was seriously considering being an organ donor, but now I'm also thinking about donating my entire carcass to the miracle of science. Dunno what use they'll get out of it, though.

How about a donating me your body for a few hours while you're still breathing? All in the name of science you understand

Worried wouldn't be even close to the fear i would feel

for what good it will be i'd probably let 'em have it. Not much use to me after the event.
