dont know anything about the uni's but i know you need at least £3000 in the bank before you go over there i was like when a friend who went to study over there told me this. where can a student get £3000 to spare and with the choice goodies over there it'd be gone in no time.

Thanks for all help. I've done all the forms BUT... my school doesn't have a CEEB/ACT number, which means I can't send off the forms yet

My sister did her MBA at Berkeley. From her accounts it's a pretty good place (the business school there is, anyway). It's also a public university, part of the University of California so it's a cheaper than other top league US universities (still wasn't cheap though but then no MBA from anywhere with a good rep is). The location, near San Francisco, is pretty damned gorgeous too.

Try applying for some Scolarships from the UK. Myself and a friend were dead set on spending our third year in the states. We even skipped lots of lectures to sort it out and spent many a time with a lecturer we cant stand who had good connections and we got accepted. Only thing was we couldn't afford it

Try local organisations or something, as you are not allowed a part time job while you are over there.

You've chosen a couple of the top private schools in the country (Harvard and Dartmouth)--and also two of the most expensive. Harvard (say you went to Harvard anywhere in the US and you get instant respect) is considered the top academic school here. It's one of a group of schools called "The Ivy League"--expensive northeastern private schools considered on an academic level above all others. The other Ivy League schools, just FYI, are Yale (in Connecticut), Brown (Rhode Island), Columbia (New York City), University of Pennsylvania, and Princeton (New Jersey).

Boston University is a good private school, but not extraordinary.

The other schools you picked seem to be state schools--University of Rhode Island, University of Massachusetts, University of Southern Maine, and Iowa State University. Every state has its own system of state colleges and universities. They're publicly funded and tuitions are kept lower to allow more people access. Of course, that doesn't mean they're necessarily cheap. But they're cheaper in general than private schools, and some are quite good.

Ming mentioned the University of California at Berkeley in a post below. That's part of the California state university system and is an excellment school. Very liberal politically though. Of the state schools you picked, I don't know anything about the University of Southern Maine. The University of Massachusetts and the University of Rhode Island are good schools, but not top level.

Iowa State University is excellent in agriculture, veterinary medicine, animal science (and I'm talking farm animals)--you get the idea. It's in Iowa--one of thsoe square-shaped states in the middle--and most of what they do out there is farm. They have a lot of foreign students at Iowa State. In fact, they encourage foreign enrollment, especially on the graduate level. But most of those students are coming here to study agriculture. Of course, you can study other subjects there. But if you're not particularly interested in agriculture, you can probably find better places to try.

Oh, Dartmouth isn't one of them. The University of Massacuettes is called Uni of Mass, Dartmouth. That confuessed me too, when looking as well, cos I kept on getting conflicting information, but I finally worked it out

Mass. is hopefully my first choice (cos Harvard is, in all fariness, dream city ) Taking my SAT tests on Dec 7th Oh no!!!!! Sent off the forms. On the plus side, Kent Uni in England has excepted me with no conditions, so it's a safety net incase I go wrong Thanks again for the replies
