Aaarrrgghhh!! I need to learn to drive!!

I hate trains with a passion at the moment!!

I decided that this week, instead of getting a lift back to uni with my dad on his way to work on the Sunday night, i'd have an adventure and get the train this morning instead!! Cause My dad wanted to leave at 4 o'clock but I was at my boyfriends house so it was too early for me to leave then!!

So I went to the station, got my extortionatly (sp??) priced ticket from wigan to Hudderfield!! Found out then that there was no direct train, I had to change at Manchester!! So got on the train at Wigan, no seats and me with a big bag!! got off at Manchester, couldn't find my platform, then 5 minutes before my next train was due to leave I stumbled upon the right platform, apparantly I couldn't find the other one cause they changed it and din't put it on the board!! Then it set off late!! I made it back to Huddersfield just in time for my lecture, but now i've got to carry my bag round as I didn't have time to go to the flat!! But not only that, I found out that there is an extra rehearsal for the play i'm in next week today!! So I have to stay late!!

I'm going shopping!! I need to releave the stress or learn to drive or something, petrol can't cost any more than a train ticket can it?? *Stress*

Wanna bet? Then there's the cost of the car itself, insurance, repairs, servicing...Running a car is not cheap, believe me.

I passed my theory test about a month ago...waiting till after the new year before I take my practical cos my lessons will be interrupted by some

over the festive period...hopefully I'll be passed my test by late February/early March, then I can get a better job and also be able to drive wherever the petrol money will take me

Yeah I know running a car can be suckey money wise, but hopefully i'll be comeing into some money soon, so that'll cover cost of car and insurence etc!! Why can't it be easier??

Not always - train fares can be more expensive than you think. Journalists from Auto Express magazine bought a car to travel from London to Newcastle and back, and the whole trip cost less than the train fare would have...

Also, I'd say that learning to drive is a good move anyway. Even if you don't buy a car of your own, you then still have the option of hiring one for long journeys which is far less expensive than the train and more flexible. Being able to drive is a very useful skill to have and it's best to take lessons now before it gets any more expensive! When I got my licence (10 years ago!), lessons were Â£15 an hour tops and there was no theory test, but these days it costs quite a bit more.

I love my car, I love driving, and my recent experiences of public transport have given me no incentive whatsoever to ease congestion by leaving my own 4 wheels at home. I paid 172 quid to get to London cold and 2.5 hours late so I can totally sympathise with the whole 'hating trains with a passion' thing

Eeek! I didn't realise trains were *that* expensive these days - mind you the last time I travelled by train regularly I was still young enough to have a Young Person's Railcard *sigh*.

Saying that, I love my little car, and I wouldn't be without it, but after two years having a 30 mile motorway drive each way to work I'm pretty sick of driving

I'd definitely agree there. I learnt when I was 17, and even though it was years before I could even think about buying a car, at least when I wanted to I could, rather than having to try and fit driving lessons round work!

Awwwww hun. Sorry to hear bout you having such a hard time. how much does a ticket to Huddersfield cost? It costs us bout a tenner to get home from Lancaster. I've avoided that so far though. I love my Dad.

he's picking me up this saturday when i go home for christmas.
This thread's actually reminded me i have my pratical test in like a month. i kinda forgot about that. i haven't had a lesson since before starting uni. oh well.
Novel idea, you could save money by staying at uni at weekends stead of going home every week.

Don't yell at me. it's only a suggestion. lol.

I've found that it's not the running of the car that's the trouble it's the unexpected maintainance and although older cars are cheap to buy they can often suffer mechanical problems that can run up the bills, new exhausts, new tyres, repairs and a whole list of things come MOT time. If something goes wrong it can cost hundreds to fix

or if you're lucky it could cost just a few quid

However I remember being at Uni without a car and it isn't something I'd ever like to have to repeat. If you can financially manage it I'd say yes learn to drive and get a little old car. It not only makes things more convenient but can also give you a lot more independence (and you'll suddenly have loads more "friends"

)

Unfortunaly, even new cars have to have these replaced. Unles you go for a stainless steel exhaust that is.

Keenangel *Fourteen phonecalls a night??!!*

And newer cars can cost a fortune to look after too.. Ray has forked out about Â£800+ over the last couple of months on getting the car serviced, the shockers replaced and four brand new tyres fitted. Saying that, he does drive a Ford Mondeo Zetec which is his pride and joy.

I've often thought about learning to drive, imagining the freedom it'd give me.. i'd be able to take the kids out and about without having to rely on hubby to chauffeur us everywhere.. but saying that, i don't quite have the courage to learn, and even if i did and passed, hubby would not let me within three feet of his beloved car, and has told me that more than once!

Don't take this the wrong way, but do you not think that you're missing out by not spending your weekends on campus? I know for me that weekends are when i got the most time to spend with my flatmates and it's often it's the only chance everyone's around at the same time.
Isn't uni about getting away from home and meeting new people? I kinda sound harsh here but don't mean to be. I'm just wondering is all. I guess it makes it difficult when you have your boyfriend to consider tho. I'll shut up now anyway.

Go for it! You can do it! It really is the best feeling once you pass your test and get a car. I can't imagine what my life would be like if I'd never learned to drive... I'd probably still be living at home with my parents! In fact, I love driving so much, I took and passed my Advanced Driving Test as well

Hmmm, cars are expensive and there is no doubt about that, but train fairs seem ridiculous these days. When I was a consultant I would travel to London and people would suggest getting the train. Why I can't understand. Sure, driving in London is no fun, neither is finding parking, but I could travel to London and back on 40 odd quids worth of fuel and 15 quids worth of parking, rather than taking impersonal, very expensive trains that were full of weirdos and having to carry heavy bags (laptop and luggage) around.

I just cant see the attraction of a train.

The weirdest thing about London is the way its quite normal to hand your keys over to an Alfa Romeo to someone you've never met in a dodgy car park to look after your car for a day... Frayed nerves anyone??

well i take my test in a months time,just managed to do the theory before the hazard perception test came in.you are definitely right about it being expensive,my lessons are Â£21 each and the tests are both around Â£40.luckily my dads paying,it was supposed to be my 21st birthday present but here we are still taking lessons almost 6 years later.i will get there eventually as it will open up so many job opportunities for me.

My lessons cost around Â£15 i think. but they're cheaper if you book a block, say 5 or 10 lessons at once. The test prices are ridiculous though. My parents are paying for my lessons and test though. i wouldn't be able to afford it if they weren't.

Well, personally, I like trains. When they run on time.

Granted, this doesn't happen very often, and is it just me or has the service got much worse in the last few months? But anyway. I can't drive, have no particular desire to, and they're still my preferred mode of transport.

Weird maybe, but some strange people even like travelling by coach (you know who you are

), which it seems to me offer the worst of both worlds..
