central heating
Has anyone here had a new central heating system installed, and if so how much was it? We are moving house and are considering buying one which has no central heating at all (it's a 4 bed victorian terrace).
A DIY job is out of the question BTW!!!

I asked my dad for you (as he's a builder) and he says it depends on what's already there. If you're going to need the full works (boiler & water tanks as well as radiators) it could cost 10k. This is based on home counties pricing and a conventional boiler with a gravity system (i.e. the water is stored in a tank in the loft). I think combis are cheaper (quicker to install and you don't need storage tanks) but they might not be suitable for the size of house. On the other hand, if the house already has a boiler and it's OK, then you may only need radiators and it might cost just half that.
I think I'd buy a house with no double glazing, but not one without central heating. Sounds expensive!

I put my central heating in myself 
3 bedroom house with a Combi gas boiler cost £1500 for all the parts and then 1 1/2 weeks constant work putting it in.

Hi Keeny, we are looking in the Gosforth/South Gosforth area. When I worked in Co. Durham being in Low Fell (Gateshead) was very handy for the motorway but now that we both work in the Toon it is getting to be a bit of a pain crossing the Tyne Bridge everyday and we fancy being near a metro station.

Well, since we're on the subject, I'll pose my question to the central heating gurus
About August 2001 (and this just shows how much I don't get round to things) I was sat on the settee with the heating on, when I heard this noise kinda like a rumble, and then the radiators stopped working downstairs. I tried bleeding them, but it didn't make a difference. The upstairs one's work fine, but my living room, and people who have been in my house can atest to, is bordering on Antartica.
Any ideas on what's up?

Do you live in a house or a flat MKF?? And if it's a flat is it ground floor or first floor...could be a burst pipe leading to the ground floor radiators and if you live on the ground floor then it's probably just leaking hot water under your house. Is there water getting into them..maybe theres a blockage in the pipe somewhere..something coming through the water pipe, into the boiler then jamming on it's way into the radiators...doubt anyone could help you without actually having a look though.
