Don't like bananas, never have. Personally, I could care less about them becoming extinct.

bananas becoming extinct
what do you think about this? I mean i don't really like them yet in 10 years there will be no bananas i mean this is awful bananas have always been here, i'm gonna personally make the msot out of them and eat them before they all go, its a shame also that if i have kids they may never get to try a banana

I'd be suprised if it turns out to be as bad as is speculated, it may be the big thing that makes the general public more accepting of genetic modification.
Though it's not a plain-and-simple case of a species being wiped out, it's still essentially the same process and the same result; I've long thought that the watershed event for public acceptance of genetic engineering would be the extiction of a speices, though I'd assumed it would be something cuddlier, like Pandas.
Even if you don't like bananas, their extinction should still be an issue -- I've never been especially fond of dodos, but I still think it's a shame there aren't any.

lets say bananas do become extinct though, surely it will effect a lot more things. Animals that live on them will then eat more of other fruits or foods wwhich will mean less of other foods so more animals could die and could it not them reduce the amount of other species?

Those animals live on the wild version, not the human edible version. So wild animals won't have a problem with it, it's all those African people that depend on the human edible variant...

Yup, this just smacks of an excuse to but GM bananas on the third world market.
Seems a little unlikely that this danger has only just been seen, and the scientist heading the organization that wants to use GM on bananas is also quoted in the article as saying that extinction is slightly over stating the problem.
Still, who wants to live in a world without banana splits?
