It's just the Telegraph going off on one and equating the guidelines for EU aid for the economic development of island communities with a revisionist view of geography.
European Commission statisticians have decided that Britain is not an island.
Forgive me if i'm wrong but if you look in the dictionary does it or does it not say Island- a piece of land totally surrounded by water, hmmm i think we are surrounded by water (thank god it keeps us away from the french)

That's exactly why the rest of Europe is jealous and trying to take away your french-free status

Just found this and I have to say "HUH!?" I know with stats you've got to draw a line somewhere, but changing definitions of basic words!? *sigh* I give up!
Recently Havoc pointed out to me something that more or less fits in with the criteria of something not being an island: the Channel Tunnel...

But that doesn't mean I have to like their decision...
They say an island can not... be attached to the mainland by a rigid structure

Well New York City is connected to New Jersey by the Jersey Tunnell and connected to Brooklyn by the Brooklyn Bridge. Not forgetting about the other various road bridges that span out from it.
And it's still referred to as Manhattan Island.

Sicily is connected to Italy by a tunnel, so I assume that is not an island either now.
Most of the Japanese Islands are now one island, as they are connected by bridges and tunnels
Britian is connected to America by a long rigid cable so I guess Britain actually now a part of both mainland europe and America

Yep, that's because it isn't part of the EU...

Northern Ireland & Eire
No, but I was drawing comparisons to a similar 'set-up' where an island is connected to the mainland by a tunnel and the fact that the EU's definition maybe flawed.

But they have to draw the line somewhere.
Personally, I choose to define the British Isles as a set of islands, one of which being an island with a tunnel attached to it.
Yup, that makes sense to me.

People! Have any of you read White Hart's post?
This is typical Torygraph nonsense. No one is redefining what constitutes an island. All that is being defined is what islands need to be prioritised for regional aid. It makes sense to me that the majority of money should be aimed at islands with no mainland connection (as this increases trade and therefore wealth on the island) or those with next to no population. It also makes no sense to prioritise an island that is actually an EU state capital.
Of course it's far easier to demonize the European Union and join in the Europhobic bashing than to actually think for yourself or to look into the truth of these matters...
However, I did love this quote:
