I would be upset if someone I personally knew died, particularly my parents or someone who died before their time. I do think it would be strange to be unmoved or upset in that situation. I think that's more down to, perhaps, being detached from extreme emotions generally, not just what is felt at someone's death.
But, I admit, I find it hard to be upset by the death of someone I didn't know (like a celebrity). If it's someone young, who met an untimely death, then I would think it was a tragedy, such as the death of Glen Quinn. But I wouldn't be upset to the point of tears or go into mourning for them. After all, as you say, I didn't know them personally.
