Online Diaries
I've just started one (well er...3 in fact ) and I think it's great!
anyone got one?
anyone got one?
Something made me giggle the other day on DJ's and LJ's when I was randomly searching through usernames and saw a couple of names that people use on here.
Going from some of the content - it clearly wasn't the person from here

Sorry if this is an ignorant question, but what's the difference between a Livejournal and a Deadjournal and why might one want one or the other or even both?
Basically LiveJournal came first. Then someone else came along, got permission to use the code and set up DeadJournal, which is pretty much the same, but slightly wittier.
I think U-Journal runs on pretty much the same code as well.
They are seperate bodies, but all running on the original LJ coding. Because they are seperate, you can't carry your LJ friends list or your membership over to DJ when you want to comment/add friends or vice versa. Some people like to have both running, so they can catch up on friends entries without having to trawl lots of journals checking for updates. In the main, people have a journal where the majority of their friends/favourite journals are. It's worth noting that some journals aren't personal stuff - some are used for fandom commentary or political soapboxes as well
If you pay for any of these, they give you better options - ie they will host personalised mood icon sets and you have the option to completely customise your layout and design. I took the cheap option and built my journal as an HTML page. Means it takes longer to update, but I can play around with the layout and stuff as much as I want. I didn't like the templates on the journal sites and am all about the pretty. Some smart people have written their own journaling program, but I never claimed to be that clever.
By the way it's here if you're interested

Same with mine. It's sometimes rude enough to make you blush, lol. I figure it's my space for me to say what I like. If ya don't like it there's a little X in the top right corner.

I pay for my DJ 'cos I wanted to colour code it to fit in with my website plus I've had 18 codes so far to hand out to my friends seeing as I pay for it. I use my LJ to read friends only posts but I still cut and paste the majority of my DJ posts over.

I use mine pretty much the same way.
There's not many, but a few who are only on one or the other, so it's easier to keep up with them.
It's surprising how many people I know have both, actually.

It does indeed. Livejournal code is open source. There is one difference between DeadJournal and the other 2 manin LJ clones(LiveJournal & UJournal) and that is that DeadJournal does not have Unicode enabled.

You can put your friends from one of the other LJ clones into your DJ (for example LiveJournal Friends into a DeadJournal account) but only if you pay for your account. It's a new feature and I don't know how it works mainly because I don't pay for either of my accounts.

Thanks guys. Now, an even more fundamental question (but a serious one) - why do you maintain these diaries?
It occurs to me that if I'd had one while I was working in Indonesia, there'd have been some truly awesome rants...

I have found that since having my journal it means I can keep up with what certain friends are doing. There are just somethings you can't post on such a public website for example. Its kind of a way to get to know that people are feeling what you are feeling sometimes. A journal is just that something where you can say what you feel without offending anyone and having restrictions. And as Teresa says, if someone does get offended they don't have to read it
Everything comes with an option of being a public post (when its just so boring you don't care who reads it - or that you are trying to reach people you know read your journal but don't have a code ), then there's friends options when only people you have listed down to read stuff can see it if logged in, then there's the private posting when you want to give yourself a kick up the rear over stuff.
I have LJ & DJ but use it in different ways - I don't post the same thing on both very often because I almost have 2 different communities of people accessing it. My DJ is the one full of the most rubbish as there are more people reading that.
Occassionally when I'm at work I have a bad habit of using it as a message system when I suddenly remember something I should have told someone and can't ring them. And I'm also getting to know and trust people I probably wouldn't chat to outside of the DJ area

I use mine just to post random crap and swear words, lol.
I'll talk about everything like my menstrual cycle, slagging people off, what the kids are up to, who I snogged, to shout at my friends when they annoy me, when I'm feeeling down and need friends comments to pick me up again. I love every now and then reading back through my back entries and remembering little (quite often unimportant) things that happened which I would have forgotten about otherwise. It's for my own personal pleasure 'tho I don't mind people reading things even 'tho it has no meaning or doesn't matter to them.
The only thing I hate about it (and you know who you are ) is when people post large pictures in their journals and it messes up the balance of my friends entries page (I get a bottom scrollbar) I also wish people would learn to do the special "cut" thing when they post lots of quiz results. Love y'all really
P.S. Kris, I think you have yours set to authorise comments before they're posted. Change it ya muppet

OK, sounds like fun. So, anyone still got any codes going spare? Beware, for you will likely be accomplices to the unleashing of a tide of dull, pretentious ramblings and occasional bitter and twisted rant upon the world...
Ming - I am sending a DJ code to the email on your profile
The addy is www.deadjournal.com (just incase you didn't guess )

Brief moment of panic as I check my profile...
Thanks very much. Should be an interesting experiment, if nothing else!

Maybe becasue my first effort was editing an older post, but I don't see how that would make any difference
I have a Livejournal which I've had for a while now, and a Deadjournal which I've just started because adding an RSL feed from people's DJs to my LJ doesn't seem to work - half the postings seem to get lost, and you can't post comments or see friends-only posts.
I'm not sure how it's going to go, but I think the two will probably end up being quite different...
Anyway, I have paid accounts for both, and I have 14 LJ codes and 2 DJ ones, so if anyone would like a code for either, email me
