Ok, me confused, what's the Internet2 network? And why the ?

It used the Internet2 network.
The Internet2 is the next generation Internet. Used to connect Universities and the like. Primarily in the USA.
Hence it will never get rolled out to the general population.

There are actually serveral networks involved in this all over the world - Internet2 Abilene in the US, Géant is the European version, CANARIE in Canada, NII in Japan, and the Asia Pacific Advanced Network (APAN).
There's also a new initiative called GTRN which aims to link all these research networks together, once the technology has matured enough, it will eventually find it's way into the home like the existing internet services
