Clean them out once a week and be careful when feeding them tuna as your hands smell of tuna and they keep biting - ouch
HamPsters
Firstly, I can't say the word Hamster, I keep putting a P in the middle of it, so that explains the subject title!!
But the point of this topic is my boyfriend is buying me a chinese dwarf hamster and I'm sooooooo excited.
I don't tend to do well with small pets though, I've had cats and they live for years, but in the past i've had a moon crab, fish and a mouse and they all died within a few months so I was wondering........any tips on hamster care??
Thanks guys!!

If you've got one of those plasticy cages keep small children away from them as they're likely to trod on them and leave squashed hamster.

They smell revolting no matter how often you clean them out. Thats all I have to say

We've got a hamster and basically they look after themselves
Its cleaned out once a week (or sooner if it mings) and make sure there is food and water available for it. Get one of those hamster balls for it so it can run around the room and get some exercise
(But make sure doors are closed - unlike me, who likes to see the hamster fall down the stairs in its ball on more than one occasion )

right you might not like this lol ...
General Care
*The toilet area of the cage should be cleaned daily (maybe a push at every two days )
*The rest of the cage needs to be cleaned out twice a week.
*Once a month you should clean the whole cage with a suitable disinfectant or detergent.
*When being given exercise outside the cage great care must be taken to avoid him escaping or nibbling on cables.
*Do not allow food to become contaminted.
when kept in good condition and fed a good diet they suffer very few ailments.
most pet shops DO recommend you buy a book about keeping hamPsters (thats how i say it too so you aint alone ) no matter how silly you feel purchasing a book that looks like it's for 6 year olds. you can usually get general advice from your local petshop too like little homemade leaflets.
enjoy the little blighter I'm getting a RAT (or two hopefully) soon I told Y I was gonna name them after her and T dye one red and plough the other with vodka.

Be warned they don't last very long, unfortunately. My Cousin had eight of the little blighters.

Don't give your hamster wool beding cause it can kill them.Only give them paper beding. Don't put your hamster in too cold a room or it'll hibernate and could die.Only give them proper hamster chocolate.
I had my first hamster when I was 6 and I killed it....anyone who wants to know how I killed it will have to ask nicely.
I still feel *really* bad about it.

Good luck with him/her! My tips are:
play with it loads when she's young, or you'll never get it tamed, and it'll always be scared of you
feed it treats when it's in your hand, so it knows that you're nice and stuff
don't let it out of your site for a second, when out of the cage, as it'll be gone in a second, under many large things that you cannot move, and have to spend hours coaxing it out
And as many others have said, be sure to clean it out every week. Oh, and use sawdust for the bottom of the cage, not straw, as the straw is extra extra stinky, honestly.
Again, good luck, and play with him/her loads etc, as you'll miss it when it's gone

Yup, sawdust is good
If you've got a VAX or something similar you can use that to do the clean-up in no time at all.. just remember to take the hamster out of the cage first
